Shelly Lynn (Paulsen) Barton was born on September 20, 1964 to Kenneth Duane Paulsen and June Avonne Paulsen of Canton, OK. Shelly went home to be with her heavenly father on November 5, 2019.
Shelly attended Canton High School and graduated in 1982. She went on to study health information management at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Shelly gave birth to her first son, Tanner, and while that added more challenges on less sleep, she continued with school and graduated from SWOSU in 1989. After college, Shelly gave birth to her second son, Logan, in 1990. Shelly had a few jobs over the next few years that she liked but she finally settled in at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City. She worked for Mercy Hospital from 1992 to 2012.
While living in Yukon, Shelly was set up on a blind date with Kyle Barton in 2002. Shelly and Kyle were a little hesitant to the idea of being set up, but little did they know, it would change the course of their lives forever. Kyle and Shelly prove that opposites really do attract, they balanced each other out perfectly. On April 21, 2003, the happy couple said I do and proclaimed their love and promised to love each other through good times and bad, richer or poorer, in sickness or in health. Truer words were never spoken for these two as they have had a lot of ups and a lot of downs over the following years. Kyle promised to love not only Shelly, but he promised to love her two boys as his own for the rest of his life.
Shelly always loved the idea of traveling and once she started, she kept a list of all of the places she wanted to travel with Kyle and the boys. They loved family vacations, boating, time on the beach, trips to the hunting cabin, and loved anything that involved getting to interact with animals. It is hard to put into words Shelly’s love for animals. Over the years she and the boys had a cockatiel, 6 dogs, and her beloved rabbit. She had to be talked out of taking in many more animals along the way.
Shelly fought many battles, some that were openly known and some that other people never knew. In 2011, cancer became her ultimate battle, but she didn’t let that stop her. She fought hard, she went through chemo and radiation, and then had to battle the side effects of those treatments for years. Just when she thought she had made it through the worst, the breast cancer metastasized to her brain and then to her spine in 2019. This started a whole new set of treatments and challenges. Through it all, she set goals to help stay in the fight. One of her goals was to go to Jamaica, the next to see her first grandchild born, then a family trip to Mexico, and then to see her second grandchild. Shelly even spent time volunteering with the animal shelter and fostering dogs. Despite her illness, Shelly was always more concerned with the wellbeing of others over herself. She also stayed true to her favorite hobbies and pastimes – shopping, decorating, organizing, singing and dancing on car rides with Logan, and scrapbooking.
Shelly’s final goals were going to meet her Lord and Savior and hug her sweet father again. She has now accomplished these goals and is at peace. Shelly is finally pain free and dancing on the streets of gold. No one would look at Shelly’s life and say that she had it is easy, but we all have a lot to learn from the strength through her faith in the Lord that she showed until her dying day. The legacy that Shelly wishes to leave behind is to inspire others to open their bible daily and transform their life so that they may have the same level of comfort as she did in her final moments.
Shelly is preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Paulsen. She is survived by her mother June Paulsen of Canton and Shelly's husband Kyle, her son Tanner and wife Felicia, her son Logan, her sister Brenda Doyel, her sister Rhonda Lance and husband Chris of Canton; her grandchildren Rilynn and Ayden Barton; and many nieces and nephews and close friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 9, 2019 at the Canton Christian Church with Clint Hayes officiating. Interment will follow in the Paulsen Family Cemetery under the direction of Pierce Funeral Home, Canton. In celebration of Shellys life, colorful clothing is encouraged.
