Bob was born in Hydro, Okla., and graduated from Medford High School. He then played running back for the Oklahoma Sooners from 1952-1954, including the 1954 Orange Bowl under famed couch, Bud Wilkinson.
He married Marcia Perkins April 10, 1955.
After graduating from OU, he spent a year in the Navy and then began his college football coaching career as a graduate assistant at OU. During his tenure as an assistant coach at the University of California (1957-59) and the University of Illinois (1960-66), both teams went to the Rose Bowl. In 1967, he joined the staff at Oregon State under Dee Andros.
After a coaching stint at the University of Miami from 1972-1977, he returned to Oregon State as the assistant director, and then director of the Beaver Club. Bob finished his career as an assistant athletic director for his beloved Oregon State University and retired in 1995.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marcia of Corvallis, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Craig Davis of Farmington, Minn.; grandchildren, Ashley, Trey, Trevor and Averi Davis; brother, Darrell Herndon of Enid, Okla.; and sister, LoRita Wilson of Hydro Okla.
Bob remained a faithful fan of Oregon State athletics throughout his retirement and was an active member of Calvin Presbyterian Church.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
A memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Calvin Presbyterian Church in Corvallis, Ore.
