The funeral for George Arnold Strohm, 90, of Longdale, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday,
Sept. 1, 2009, at Longdale Gym with Pastor Ray Schoonmaker officiating.
Interment will follow in Longdale Cemetery under the direction of Haigler-Pierce
Funeral Home, Canton.
George was born Sept. 30, 1918, in Omega, Okla., to Ross and Augusta (Itchner)
Strohm. He departed this life on Friday afternoon, Aug. 28, 2009, at his home in
Longdale, surrounded by his family.
He graduated from Longdale High School.
George married Louise Martin on April 12, 1941, in Enid, Okla. He served as a
ship's cook on the USS Clairfield during World War II. George and Louise resided
for several years in Wichita, Kan., before returning to Longdale in 1964. He
worked for the state highway department for five years and also worked as a
brick mason.
He was a member of Longdale Community Church and was a 32nd degree mason with
membership in the Sunflower Lodge 86 in Wichita.
George was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lloyd Strohm and
Johnie Strohm; and three sisters, Alta Winter, Hazel Buster and Martha Ann
Strohm.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Louise (Martin) Strohm, of the home; two
daughters, Judy Sharron Hughes and husband Chris of Williams Bay, Wis., and
Janet Teague and husband Terry of Plainview, Texas; four grandchildren, Jeff
Hughes and wife Jenice, Greg Hughes and wife Mia, Carrie Harris and husband Paul
and Kelly Smith and husband Ryan; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and
nephews.
Visitation will be held 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Monday with the family
receiving guests at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Monday.
