Larry Don McConnell

Larry Don McConnell
November 16, 1958 ~ June 08, 2021

Larry Don McConnell was born on November 16, 1958 in Fairview, OK to Alman and Edith McConnell. He departed this life on June 8, 2021 at the age of 62.

Larry spent his childhood on the family farm helping with the daily duties of running a dairy and taking care of the animals. He loved attending cattle sales as a child and would often pretend to be ill so he didn’t have to go to school, but would be well enough when his Dad and Mom were heading to the local sale barn or to deliver eggs. Larry was constant; a constant brother, uncle, and friend. Larry would go above and beyond to make you feel loved. Whether it be a random call or text message he had a way of making your bad day turn to a good day. He never missed a family event and never missed sending a “Happy birthday!”.

After graduating Canton High School in 1977 Larry decided to further his education. While working several jobs and attending college full time Larry earned his Bachelor of Arts in Education from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 1981 and then transferred to Oklahoma State University earning his Master of Arts in 1983.

As a young teacher Larry taught at numerous high schools across Oklahoma and also taught at Oklahoma State University. He finally found his landing spot in Brownsville, TX. While there he taught at the University of Texas and Brownsville Independent School District/Lopez School of Fine Arts Academy. After 33 years of teaching Larry retired in 2016. During this time Larry taught, inspired, mentored, and loved his students. Larry spoke of his students like family, constantly pushing them to do their best and follow their passions. Larry took pride in teaching and the numerous awards he won were proof of how passionate he was about teaching. While teaching at Los Fresnos High School in Texas, Larry implemented the Radio-Television-Film program. Under Larry’s teaching this program grew from 52 students the first year to 298 the second year.

Larry was the director of five major productions each year and the Annual UIL One-Act Competition Play at Los Fresnos High School. He received special recognition from Los Fresnos, Texas Chamber of Commerce. He served as the curriculum writer for the speech, Debate, and Radio-Television Production courses for Brownsville Independent School District from 1994-1998. He was the creator and Director of a student presented workshop in the area of Theatre Arts Production presented annually at the Texas Theatre Association Convention from 1995-2005.

After retirement Larry decided to move back to the historic family farm where he enjoyed spending his time taking care of his cattle, chickens, goats and beloved puppies. Larry rarely missed a goat sale and was always looking for the next great deal to improve his herd. He also attended the Longdale Gym Association meetings and would help when he could with the annual 4th of July parades.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents; Alman and Edith; grandparents; William and Glennie McConnell and Clark and Ethel Pharis; beloved puppies Daisy and Sadie; Larry is survived by one brother, Lonnie McConnell and wife Lynn of Mooreland, OK; one sister, Glenda Hill and husband Bill of Longdale, OK; nieces and nephews; Eric and Lisa McConnell of, Kingfisher, OK; Kari Hart of Canyon, TX; Heather Rose of Ringwood, OK; Jay Fry of Enid, OK; Dean and Cindy Hill of Longdale, OK and Mandy and Newley Hutchison of Canton, OK; great nieces and nephews Trenton and wife Diana McConnell of Oklahoma City, OK, Miranda and husband Grant Hayes of Guthrie, OK; Kristi and Hunter McAlister of Woodward, OK; Robert Cheney Jr of Canton, OK; Colby Cheney of Canyon, TX; Staci Hart of Canyon, TX; Brock Hutchison of Canton, OK; and Newt Hutchison of Canton, OK; special friends Bonnie Dayton of Oklahoma City, OK; Matt Thom of Medicine Lodge, KS; and Tim Coffey of Canton, OK; numerous great-great nieces and nephews and family and friends.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 14, 2021 at the Longdale Cemetery with Pastor Travis Howerton officiating. Condolences may be made online at www.piercefuneralhomes.com.
