TAPS SOUND FOR CIVIL WAR VETERAN
Masonic Services Held for J. P. D. Mouriquand, Pioneer Resident

Sorrowing relatives and friends paid their last respects to JPD Mouriquand, Civil War veteran and pioneer settler of this community, at Homestead Thursday and Friday of last week.  Mr. Mouriquand died at his home in Homestead early Wednesday morning, February 20th after a short illness.

Scottish Rite Masonic services were held at midnight Thursday, conducted by the Guthrie Conslatory.  Friday afternoon services were held in the M. E. church of Homestead.  Like another Civil War veteran, W. W. Haworth, who was buried on July 4th, Mr. Mouriquand was buried on the day we observe as the anniversary of the "Father of our country."

Rev. Joyce Webster, pastor, preached a very thought provoking sermon based on the beautiful 11th chapter of Ecclesiastes emphasizing part of the 13th verse, "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man". Beloved old hymns were sung by a quartet composed of Mrs. Loy, Mrs. Teasley, Mr. Claud Bryce and Mr. Clyde Ewing.

The Masonic Lodge of Okeene, assisted by some members of the Watonga Lodge, conducted the impressive masonic burial service at the cemetery with the latter also singing, "Oh Love That Will Not Let me Go" as part of the services.

The Brown Flower Shop of Okeene assisted with the flowers

====================

JOHN PETER DIOGENE MOURIQUAND was born at Beauford, France July 1, 1846 and died at Homestead Oklahoma, February 20, 1935, age 88years, 7 months, 19 days.

In 1858 he came to America. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War.  He was married to Miss Samantha J. Buck in 1866. Of the nine children born to them three are still living.  Mrs. Nora Burt of Alva, Mr Elon Mouriquand of Homestead, S. A. Mouriquand of Albuquerque, N. M.  He also is survived by 8 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He brought his family to Oklahoma in the spring of 1892 at the opening of the Cheyenne Country, at which time he moved to this community, where he lived until his death His wife, Mrs Samantha J. Mourquand, proceded him in death as she was laid to rest in January, 1933.

In 1874 he was raised to the degree of master mason and in 1920 he took the Scottish Rite work in Oklahoma Consistory No. 1 at Guthrie.  He was ordained into the Baptist ministry in 1890.  As a minister he increased in influence in this community.  For almost 43 years he has lived in this community and has been one of the forceful factors from the early days for making this a law abiding and peaceful community.  He was one of the persons who secured the enforcement of the liquor laws that have prevented this debauching influence from having the right of way in this community. Before the days of prohibition he helped to mould the sentiment against this traffic and during the days of prohibition he helped to secure the influence of the law.

He called the first prayer meeting of the community. He was responsible for getting the first mail route to service this community so that the people would not have to go to Watonga or Hennessey for their mail.  With his going, there goes a man whose influence as a director of community standards will be difficult to fill for our day.  When he was able to attend church services he was there.  His Faithfulness has been an inspiration to everyone.
