Harley Zweiacher

February 10, 1914 ~ March 3, 2002

Harley Zweiacher, who served as Geary's Mayor for sixteen years ending in April of 1999, died Sunday, March 3, 2002 in the Parkview Hospital in El Reno, Oklahoma at the age of 88. Harley was born February 10, 1914 at El Reno, Oklahoma the youngest child of John and Emma (Lehmann) Zweiacher.

Harley graduated from Geary High School and was a member of the First Mennonite Church and later attended the Geary First Baptist Church. He farmed and ranched in the Geary area all his life. Harley married Dorothy M. Claphan on July 22, 1939, at ALAT BISTA, KS and to this union was born one son, and two adopted daughters. He later married Dorothy Ruth Ames on January 18, 1968 at Safford, AZ and she preceded him in death November 10, 1975 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was later united in marriage to Opal Duncan July 6, 1976 and she preceded him in death January 29, 1977 at El Reno, Oklahoma. On August 4, 1977, Harley, married Ruth Hobson at Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Harley shared the honor of being chosen Citizen of the Year with Jewel Duncan in 1980. He will be remembered, along with Geary Council Members, and city employees, for many improvements made in city services during his term in office. He was very proud of completed projects such as the sewage lagoon, water line, and electrical upgrades, street resurfacing, and the city park renovations.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Emma Zweiacher, two wives, Dorothy R. & Opal Zweiacher, one grandson, Troy Zweiacher, five beloved brothers and sisters.

Survivors include: his wife Ruth Zweiacher of the home, El Reno, OK; three children, Harold Zweiacher & his wife Cindy of Geary, OK, Charlotte Stinnett & her husband George of Smithfield, VA, and Jan Clare & her husband Terry of Oklahoma City, OK; four step-children, Paul Dale Hobson & his wife Loretta of Calumet, OK, Anne Hobson of Mustang, OK, Judy Sisson & her husband Bob of Weatherford, OK, and Gayle Duncan of Watonga, OK; four grandchildren, Dana, Shelley, Michael, and Brian; four step-grandchildren, Tim, Todd, Gini, and Jeff; six great-grandchildren, and nine step-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services: Geary First Baptist Church, Thurs., 2:00 P.M., March 7, 2002, Geary, OK. Officiating: Rev. Clifford Koehn & Rev. Brian King. Burial: Geary Cemetery, Geary, OK under the direction of the Turner Funeral Home, Geary, OK.
