Funeral services for Alvin "Neil" Nelson, 56, of Canton, OK will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Canton Christian Church with Chaplain Steven Meier of Ross Hospice officiating. Interment will follow in Cottonwood Cemetery near Hitchcock, OK under the direction of Haigler-Pierce Funeral Home of Canton. Neil was born on August 6, 1952 at Enid, OK to Calvin and Clara (Seifried) Nelson and departed this life on Sunday, January 18, 2009 at his home in Canton. Neil grew up in Canton and graduated from Canton High School class of 1971. He married Mary Unruh on June 6, 1981 at Canton, OK. Neil worked at U.S. Gypsum for 36 years and retired in March of 2008. He was a member of the Canton Christian Church and had been a member of the Canton Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, camping, wood-working, and treasure hunting with his metal detector. Neil was also an all-around handyman and inventor of many things. He was preceded in death by his father Calvin Nelson and step-mother Pauline Nelson; Survivors include his wife Mary Nelson of the home; one daughter, Nicole Reinart and husband Barry of Enid, OK; mother Clara Nelson of Canton; one sister, Judy Long and husband Keith of Canton, OK; and several nieces and nephews; Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the A.L.S.
