A traditional all-night wake service will begin at 7:00 p.m., Thursday evening, December 19, 2013 at the Red Hat residence south of Longdale, OK for Edward Red Hat, II, 56, of Watonga, OK. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, December 20, 2013 at the Canton Native American Gymnasium with Reverend Gerald Panana and Reverend George Akeen, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Canton Reinterment (Chiefs) Cemetery near Canton Lake.

Edward Red Hat, II, indian name Blue Bird, was born on December 16, 1957 at St. Louis, MO to William Wayne and Emma (Curtis) Red Hat. He departed this life at his residence in Watonga, OK on Monday, December 16, 2013. He lived most of his life at Longdale, OK. Edward was Headsman of the Cheyenne Bowstring, he participated in the traditional Cheyenne ceremonies in Seiling every year. He highly regarded the Cheyenne ceremonies and always tried to attend before he got sick. He enjoyed beadworking and making gourds. Edward was named after his grandfather, Cheyenne Arrowkeeper Edward Red Hat. His grandfather taught him a lot of the Cheyenne ways. He was glad his grandparents were influential in his raising as well as his parents. Edward and his sister Minoma Red Hat both participated in the Longest Walk in 1978. Edward started in Colorado then his sister Minoma asked her grandfather if she could attend, she started in Wichita, KS and they walked on to Washington, DC to fight for all Indian ceremonies, religious freedom and to preserve their way of life.

Edward was preceded in death by his wife Gerlene Red Hat; father William Wayne Red Hat, Sr.; grandfather Edward Red Hat; grandmother Minnie Red Hat; two sisters, Marilyn Red Hat and Minoma Red Hat Koshiway; nephew Christopher Wayne Red Hat and niece Michelle Red Hat; Survivors include two sons, Jeremiah Red Hat and Sunbear Red Hat; seven daughters, Marissa Red Hat, Erica Red Hat, Marilyn Red Hat, Amy Red Hat, Penny Johnson, Clarissa Hawkins and Ingela Red Hat; mother Emma Red Hat of Longdale; eighteen grandchildren whom he cared for greatly and they all loved him very much; four brothers, Bill Red Hat, Jr., Luther Red Hat, Albert Red Hat, Sr. and Steve Red Hat, Sr all of Longdale, OK; five sisters, Eva Big Medicine and Mary Whitehat both of Watonga, OK, Zola Old Bear and Pat Whiteeagle both of Longdale, OK and Pam Red Hat of Oklahoma City, OK; Condolences may be made online at www.haiglerpierce.com.
