David Fanman, Jr., also known as "Beans", was born March 31, 1949 in Clinton, OK to David “Gunsmoke” Fanman, Sr. and Annie Maria (Allrunner) Fanman of Fonda, OK. He departed this life on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at Albuquerque, NM. Beans was raised in the Fonda community. His Cheyenne name was "Mugid" meaning Little Bigman. He graduated from Chilocco Indian School in 1967. After high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he graduated from MCRD San Diego. He served two tours in Vietnam and was recalled for Operation Desert Storm. He also was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He served 20 years in the USMC and retired as a Staff Sergeant on December 15,1989.
On June 9,1984, he married his wife Lorraine Fanman. He attended University of New Mexico and Dine College, receiving his associates in applied sciences. He traveled to many pow-wows across the U.S along with his wife and his children, Sarah Marie Fanman, David Fanman, III, Carlos Lee Gloria and younger sister Beulah Fanman. He enjoyed taking trips up north to Montanato to see family and friends. He enjoyed gourd dancing and listening to Thunderhill, Radmilla Cody and Tina Turner. He also enjoyed the beautiful place of Monument Valley, Utah being able to spend time with his father in law Seth T. Bigman, Sr. and family. He was their part time sheepherder when they would escape the fence, and one time, falling down in front of the tourists taking pictures of a Navajo sheepherder in action. He enjoyed having his cat bullpit near him at home and made sure that she made the trip to the new home in Albuquerque to be by his side. He made a home for his family in Fort Defiance,AZ where he worked as a homebound teacher working with special education and at risk students.
David Fanman, Jr. came from a long line of chiefs from both parents. He is one of few hereditary Cheyenne chiefs. From his mother's side he is the grandson of Chief Redmoon and Chief Jacob Allrunner, the first known "Little Boy Chief " of the Cheyenne people. On his father's side he is a grandson of Chief Tallbull, the last Chief of the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers. Beans is a part of the the Dog Soldier society. His father David Fanman, Sr. was an Arapaho Chief. Beans lived the life of a chief. He was always there to help his people when needed or when someone would ask him for help, he would never say no. He did his best to be there for his people in the best possible way living in Arizona.
David is survived by his wife Lorraine Fanman, daughter Sarah M. Fanman, two sons David "Beano" Fanman and Carlos L. Gloria, four sisters Linda Jensen, Rose Fanman, Janice Faye Fanman and Bealuh Fanman, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchilden. His Marine daughter LeAnn Remirez of Ohio. He is preceded in death by his parents David and Annie Fanman and brothers James Fanman, Kingsley Fanman and Malcolm Fanman and nephew Russell Fanman.
Traditional wake services will be held at 6:00 p.m., Friday, August 25, 2017 at the Canton Native American Gymnasium. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the same venue with Rev. Gerald Panana officiating. Interment will follow in Cantonment Cemetery west of Canton Lake under the direction of Pierce Funeral Home, Canton, OK. Condolences may be made online at www.piercefuneralhomes.com..
