William T. Schiska
(May 17, 1923 - May 16, 2008)
William "Bill" Thomas Schiska was born May 17, 1923, to Allen and Grace Waggoner Schiska, at Canton, OK., and died Friday, May 16, 2008, at the Veterans Center in Clinton, OK at the age of 84. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 19, 2008 at the Canton Christian Church with Steve Driskill officiating. Burial will follow in the Canton Cemetery under the direction of Haigler-Pierce Funeral Home.
Bill was raised in Canton by his mother and grandmother. He dropped out of school in the 11th grade to work on the new Canton Dam project. He later moved to Louisiana to work on a Corps of Engineers project. Returning to Canton, he was drafted into the Army, serving in Europe from 1943 to 1946, and was part of the American forces at the Battle of the Bulge.
After his return to Oklahoma, Bill married Blanche Bensch in Liberal, KS, Feb. 16, 1946. The couple lived in Seiling for a brief time while Bill worked for Gaylord's Service Station. They then moved to Canton after purchasing Champlain Service Station, and owned the business for around 30 years until it sold. Bill then became the contract mail carrier for the Postal Service and ran the mail from Canton to Enid until his retirement.
Bill enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, and most of all, his family. He was a member of the Canton Christian Church and the Canton American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Blanche, Canton; son, Tom and wife, Barbara, Canton; three grandchildren, Sueann Baird, and husband, Bob, Eufaula; Brad Schiska and wife Angela, Fairview; and Craig Schiska, Enid; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Terry, and a daughter, Annette; two brothers, Bob and Ed Schiska and one sister, Jean Kopf. Memorials may be made to the Canton Senior Citizens Center. Condolences may be left for the family on the web at www.haiglerpierce.com.
