Mamie Irene Acre Masonhall was born April 19, 1928 to Charles and Maggie Acre in her parents' home southwest of Canton, Oklahoma. Mamie attended Canton Public School all 12 years and graduated in 1946. While in high school she played the French Horn and was a member of the Canton High School marching band. She enjoyed telling that she had her first legal driver's license when she was only 14 years old. Even though parts of the country were experiencing the Dust Bowl and the times of the Great Depression, Mamie would explain that her family always had plenty of food. They raised a large garden and canned enough food to last through the year. This was a practice that Mamie would continue for several decades. For years she also raised chickens and sold Grade A eggs to one of the three local grocery stores.
On October 20, 1946 Mamie married Glen Ray Masonhall in a double wedding with her brother Harold C. Acre and Edith Chaloupek. For a few years Glen Ray and Mamie lived at Eagle City. Then in 1953 Glen Ray and Mamie moved to Canton to the farm that had belonged to Mamie's grandparents. This is where they reared their three children.
Mamie was a woman with many talents, skills, and interests. Kittens and hummingbirds were some of her favorite animals. She was an accomplished seamstress who liked to collect thimbles; her CB "handle" was Thimble Thumper! She was also a member of the International Brick Collectors. She had been a longtime member of the Progressive Home Demonstration Club. Mamie's beautiful crocheted afghans kept us warm in the winter, but will forever warm our hearts. Most importantly she worked side by side with her husband on their farm. She helped with the cattle, the crops, and all the other facets of farm life. Mamie was delighted to learn that their farm had been certified as an Oklahoma Centennial Farm this year.
Mamie was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church. She had served in every office of the United Methodist Women and many offices of the administrative board. She was editor of the church newsletter The Circuit Rider for about 35 years.
On April 6, 2018 Mamie went to heaven. Waiting in heaven to greet her were her husband Glen Ray and their son Wesley, her parents, her brother Harold Acre, one son-in-law Sherman Butler.
Mamie is survived by her two daughters, Glenace Butler of Fairview, OK and Kathryn Denton and husband Dean of Canton, OK, and one daughter-in-law, Charlotte Masonhall of Canton, OK. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Glen R. Habbershaw of Fairfax, VA, Addie S. Thornton and husband Danny of Prosper, TX and William R. Denton and wife Amanda of Longdale, OK; two step-grandchildren, Philip Butler and Casey of Wichita, KS and Jennie Butler Scott of Enid, OK; She also leaves behind four great-grandchildren, Katie and Sydney Thornton of Prosper, TX and Marshall and Leam Denton of Longdale, OK; four step-great-grandchildren, Edward and Aline Scott of Enid, OK and Aiden and Adelyn Butler of Wichita, KS; She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at
the Canton United Methodist Church with Pastor Daniel Hammans and Jerry Fast
officiating. Interment will follow in Canton Cemetery under the direction of
Pierce Funeral Home, Canton. In lieu of flowers the family would suggest
donations to the Canton United Methodist Church with the funeral home acting
as custodian of the funds. Condolences may be made online at
