Gary Allen Martin (Papa) was born on October 24, 1952 in Canton, Oklahoma. He departed this life on November 29, 2017 after a hard fought battle against cancer. He was the baby of 8 children born to Lavern Riley & Hazel Francis Kephart Martin.
He attended Canton public schools where he excelled in all sports. After graduating from Canton high school in 1970 he attended SWOSU and Autry Vo-tech.
He married Terry Sue Anson and together they had 3 children. Gary was a fun loving dad who was active in coaching, Boy Scouts and playing with all the neighborhood kids. Gary loved to play in alumni football games and played league basketball well into his 40's.
Gary served as a volunteer fire fighter for the Canton fire department. He had the privilege of being on a search and rescue team during the OKC bombing. He was a member of the Canton Lions Club, former President of the Canton Sports Boosters, and a dedicated loyal Sooner fan.
He found his true calling when he became a Papa! His love for his grandchildren was never ending.
Gary was the town plumber for many years. He worked in the oilfield industry for various companies until his retirement in October of this year.
Gary never met a stranger, if you weren't already friends with him you would be by the time you finished your conversation. He has many life long friends with stories too numerous to mention.
Gary is survived by his wife Terry, daughter Lesa Vaughn & husband Chris, son Gary Mikel Martin & wife Shannon, and son Anthony Martin; he is also survived by grandchildren Colby & Jackie Haigler , Reid & Kylie Haigler, Gabby and Brooks Martin, Brittannee, Christian and Terlee Martin; two great grand babies Rhett Haigler & Jovi Haigler; two brothers, Ronnie Martin and wife Lola and Leon Martin and wife Georgia; two sisters, Donna Munyon and husband Ron and Barbara Weber; as well as numerous family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Carol James & Laverna Nichols and two brothers, Doyle Dean & Lynyard Martin and many other family & friends.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 1st, 2017 at the Canton Christian Church with burial following at the Canton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Canton Boy Scouts or to the Papa Gary A.
