John Gregory Gray passed away sleeping off a routine migraine on January 24, 2020 at his home in Canton, Oklahoma. John was born on April, 6th 1956 to Peggy Ganell (Grothe) Gray and Cecil Dean Gray in Okeene, Oklahoma.
John was the youngest of four rambunctious hellions. He was always called Mamaw’s precious baby boy, who got away with anything and everything. John skidded by doing just what he wanted and graduated from Canton High School in 1974, with a diploma in Rock n Roll. John was a busy man with two marriages bringing seven beautiful children into this world. John and Kathy (Smith) married in 1974 and had two daughters, the beginning of “The Gray Girls”, Regina Janell and Jessica Danell. John and Kathi (Bailey) married in 1979 and added four more daughters to the gang, Cassie Janell, Nancy DeltaGanell, Jenny Peggy Danell and Jacqueline Terry Gene. (Thanks for leaving me out of the middle name pattern, Daddy!) John and Shannon (Meat) finally had his one baby BOY, Shane Leon. Baby Shane went to be with Jesus at the early age of 3 in 2003.
John spent the remaining years of his life being a thorn in Mona’s side. She truly loved him unconditionally, even with his relentless teasing. She served him and recalls always making his favorite meal, goulash. Let’s not forget it was always paired with his glass of iced and peppered milk. They enjoyed spending time with their blended families and resided in Canton. John was and always will be “DADDY” to his girls. He was “Poppa John” to his 13 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.
He spent over two decades serving the town and people of Canton. He was the Water and Sewer Superintendent, Meter Reader, City Maintenance Man, Ditch Digger, Street Sweeper, Dog Catcher, and the list goes on. What couldn’t and didn’t John do? He also served as a volunteer firefighter for The Town of Canton for nearly 20 years.
John’s life was one hell of a ride. He was always enjoying his many different hobbies. If you knew him, you knew his love for loud music. Pink Floyd was his favorite band and they could always be heard on his top-of-the-line sound systems. Let’s not even begin to count the hours he spent in front of the newest gaming systems with his kids. He lived and loved fast. He was always trying to push it to the limit with his fast cars and his Triumph motorcycles.
Our Daddy loved his family deeply and dearly. He had a quick fuse and was always ready to fight anyone who crossed a loved one. That even includes his big brother for one of Papaw’s beloved furry companions. He was definitely a unique man with his potty mouthed jokes, scaring the hell out of his nieces, nephews and his own kids, and his fascination with all things death and funeral related. Yes, you read that correctly. If anything, his passing has answered a lot of his life long questions. John was preceded in death by his loving parents and his only son. He is survived by his life partner Mona, his siblings, Jackie, Terry and Gary, his six daughters and their rug rats.
Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, February 1, 2020
at Canton Cemetery with Pastor Jeremy Parker officiating. In lieu of
flowers, contributions can be made to the John Gray Memorial Fund at the CSB
of Canton. Any contributions will be used towards his monument. Condolences
