Santford L. "Sandy" Coffey
(September 15, 1929 - May 4, 2015)

Santford L. "Sandy" Coffey was born on the family farm southwest of Canton, Oklahoma on September 15, 1929, to William Crantford and Rosie (Baker) Coffey. He died May 4, 2015 at the Fairview Hospital.

As a youth on the farm, Sandy began a career of hunting, fishing, sharing of fishing holes, mapping locations of hunting spots and love of the outdoors he never relinquished. He moved to Canton with his family at the age of 12. Sandy loved his high school athletics, excelling in punting, and helping Canton restart the football program after a six year lull during WW II. After graduating Canton High School in 1948, Sandy joined the Navy serving honorably on three Navy ships during the Korean War. He served on the destroyer U.S.S Mansfield, cruiser U.S.S. Macon, and battleship U.S.S. Missouri. His last tour included a six week Good Will Tour through the Meditteranian Sea on the Macon, visiting various ports before his discharge.

Sandy returned to the Canton area in 1952, where he went to work for the United States Gypsum Company at Southard, Ok. He began work in the Keens Mill, transferring to the Packing Department, and later to the Mill. He retired in 1991 after 39 years of service. After retiring Sandy enjoyed tractor driving and working outside.

Sandy married Elsie Marie Schreiner on June 8, 1953 in Enid, Ok. They settled in Canton and worked hard on raising two sons Terry and Tim. Sandy and Elsie were married 44 years. Sandy later gave his life and heart to the Lord, and joined the Canton Seventh-day Adventist Church and remained an active member.

Sandy was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Virgil and Floyd; two sisters Georgie and Gladys; and two infant siblings.

He is survived by his sister, Luevada Otwell of Weatherford, OK; sons Terry and wife Sheryl of Fairview, OK and Tim of Canton, OK; step-grand children Justin Clow of Woodward,OK and Kelli Greenwood and husband Doug of Little Rock, AR; step-great-grandchildren Jordan and Pete Greenwood also of Little Rock; Sandy also leaves many loved nephews, nieces, and cousins;

Viewing will be at the Haigler-Pierce Funeral Home in Canton, daily until 8:00 p.m. The family will receive family and friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m., Thursday evening, May 7, 2015. Graveside services with military honors rendered by the U.S. Navy will be held at Canton Cemetery south of town at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 8, 2015 with Pastor Rex Shores officiating. Memorials may be made to the Canton Seventh-day Adventist Church, the Diabetes Foundation or the American Heart Association, with the funeral home serving as custodian at P.O.
