Funeral services for William Lakey will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, at the Sayre First Baptist Church, officiated by Tom Cooksey and Richard Waters. Burial will be at Sayre-Doxey Cemetery, Sayre, Beckham County, Oklahoma under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service, Sayre. William D. "Bill" Lakey was born September 19, 1911 in Collingsworth County, Texas to Alice Irene and Thomas Richard Lakey and died Thursday in his home in Sayre at the age of 90.
Bill lived with his parents northwest of Sayre before moving to Delhi in 1922 where he graduated from Delhi High School in 1929. He was married to Dorothy Loyce Walker at the Dill City First Baptist Church between Sunday School services and morning worship on December 25, 1932, officiated by Dorothy's father, Rev. E.D. Walker. Bill served his country during World War II and after his return, he enjoyed a successful banking career that included work at Farmers Home Administration; where he made the first five resettlement loans made in the United States, National Farm Loan Association, The Federal Land Bank and The City National Bank of Sayre where he served as President for a number of years.
He was a member of the Sayre First Baptist Church for over 61 years where he was a Deacon and taught the Business Men's Sunday School Class.
Bill was active in the community and served on the Sayre Hospital Board for 55 years. He also was a member of the Sayre Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow and on June 27, 2000 was honored by the club as a Lifetime Honorary Member. He was the Secretaary for the Bec kham County Election Board for 27 years, retiring in November 1979.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of the home; one daughter Phylllis Lakey Welk and husband Bill of Broken Arrow; three sons, William David Lakey, Jr., and wife Chris, Eddie Tom Lakey and wife Marinita, James Robert Walker Lakey and wife Sue Ann all of Sayre; three sisters, Opal Waters, Leona Fay Lakey, Alice Bryan all of Amarillo, Texas; ten grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
