Services for Joseph T. Brickell, prominent Sayre pioneer civic leader and businessman who died Friday night at the Sayre hopdital following a long illness, were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 p.m, at the Presbyterian church. Feb. Paul Allen of Norman and Rev. Leonard Cronin officiated.
Mr. Brickell operated the Brickell Ice plant and locker Service in Sayre until his health failed and he was then joined in the operation of the business by his son, Fran, Mrs. Brickell, and his grandson, Joe F. He served as agent for the Rock Island railway at Sayre for 20 years before retiring.
He was an Elder in the First Presbyterian church of Sayre, a member of the Sayre Masonic lodge, a member of the Rotary club and the Chamber of Commerce. At one time he was a silent partner of the late Charles J. Seely, one time owner of the Sayre Headlight.
He was born August 12, 1876 at Friendsville in Blunt county, Tennessee.
He was married to Tacy Stone on June 10, 1903 at Staffendville, Kansas.
They came to Saayre in 1908 and have made their home there since.
He is survived by his wife of the home address, one son, Frank one daughter, Mrs. Mary Jane Peterson of Cheyenne, seven grandchildren, Joe F. Brickell of Sayre, Mrs. Helen Jo Pullen of Oklahoma City, Joe, Tracy, Fred and Mark Peterson of Cheyenne, and Mrs. Betty Sue Eastridge of Salina, Kansas, and five great grandchildren.
