Hubert Wade Vernon was born May 13, 1926 on the Vernon Family Farm west of Sayre, Oklahoma to Catherine and Tommie Jefferson Vernon. He passed away December 4, 2016 at Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 21 days.
Hubert attended New Liberty and Sayre Schools but before graduating his senior year he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country during World War II. After his discharge, he returned home where he finished his education and graduated from high school in the spring of 1947. He also returned to his childhood sweetheart, Faye Hartman, and on October 4, 1947 they eloped to Wheeler, Texas and they were married at the Wheeler Church of Christ. They remained on the farm for a year before moving to Los Angeles, California. They lived there for 6 years until their son, David, was born and Hubert was offered a job with El Paso Natural Gas and they moved to Jal, New Mexico. His job to took them all over southeastern New Mexico and west Texas. He retired from El Paso after 34 years of service and for the next 12 years he and Faye divided their time between living in Sayre and serving as the caretakers at Black Mountain Ranch in southeastern Colorado until they retired and remained in Sayre to make their home. Hubert loved following his children and grandchildren in all their activities including golf, rodeo, basketball and hog showing. During his retirement years, he especially enjoyed working at the Sayre Livestock Auction where he made many, many friends.
Hubert was a longtime member of the Church of Christ and attended the Churches at Sayre and Elk City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, David Wade Vernon, 2 sisters, Lorene Copenhaver and Leila Lowder.
He is survived by his wife, Faye, of the home; a son, Danny Vernon, Sayre, OK; 6 grandchildren, Tommy Vernon and wife, Michele, Lubbock, TX, Ty Vernon, West Lake Village, CA, Tim Vernon, Lubbock, TX, Kadi Poole, Sayre, OK, Jake Vernon and wife, LaNell, Sayre, OK, Travis Vernon and Olivia Martin, Sayre, OK; 11 great grandchildren, his daughter-in-law, Sue Vernon, Lubbock, TX; a sister, Mary Alma Lowder, Sayre, OK: and a host of other relatives and friends.
