Earlton Ray Toon was born August 4, 1926 in Cove, Arkansas to James Lewis and Nettie Josephine O'Hearn Toon. Ray passed to his new life on June 17, 2017 at the age of 90 years, 11 months and 17 days. He was the 2nd born of 8 children, 7 boys and 1 girl. He married Linnia Lee Richardson on May 5, 1945 in Sayre, and to their union 2 children were born.
Ray is survived by his daughter, Patti Macumber and his son, Ed Toon of Sayre, Oklahoma, 3 grandchildren: Jared Macumber and wife, Elizabeth of Sayre, Rozz Grigsby and husband, James of Oklahoma City and Annie Bewley and husband, Derek of Oklahoma City. He leaves behind 3 great-grandchildren: Kagen Macumber of Sayre, and Taylor and Elliott Grigsby both of Oklahoma City. He is survived by 2 siblings, Jimmy Toon of Wills Point, Texas and Jo Helen Toon Chambers and husband, Bill, of Dallas, Texas and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brothers Bobby John, a toddler, Howard Toon of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Bill Toon of Pleasant View, Tennessee, Don Toon M.D. of Crossett, Arkansas, Gary Toon of Hamburg, Arkansas, two nieces, Cindy and Christy, a nephew, Andy, and beloved aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Ray attended school in Free Center, Batiste and Bethel before moving to the Erick/Delhi area where he had visited his Aunt, Stella Toon Mills many times to help pull bolls. Among other things, he helped his father drive a team of mules building farm ponds. Ray left home early, and seeing a spark in the youngster, Ross Dugger hired him to drive a delivery truck for Sayre Wholesale. Ray then worked many years as a dry cleaner and as a salesman at International Harvester and Ford Motor Company. He started his own successful business, the Ray Toon Motor Mart, where he proudly sold cars to many. People frequently approached saying, "You know, you sold me my first car and trusted me to pay you when no one else would." When his father-in-law passed suddenly, Ray learned to farm and raise livestock, doing the farm work after regular working hours. He later had an Oil and Gas leasing business and raised registered racing Quarter Horses, winning many times. He continued to work his farm into his late 80's. Ray was a ling-time member of the First Baptist Church of Sayre where he was baptized and once taught junior high/high school boy's Sunday school classes. He was a past member of the Kiwanis Club and the Moose Lodge.
Ray took pleasure in his coffee circles at Denney's and Hutchs', going out to eat, mowing, and driving the farms watching for wildlife. He never missed a family reunion and the chance to see his extended family. Always the hard-working, family man, Ray's delight was in his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and he attended all their activities whenever possible. From an early age, Ray always had a dog, and he is missed by Bully and Sissy. One of Ray's last projects was to co-author a book with his daughter called: Raybo-Stories of the Bumper Bandit, re-telling life stories about growing up in the Dirty Thirties. In his blessed life, Ray saw things like Babe Ruth's record-breaking home run, the invention of bubble gum, the discovery of Penicillin, the Great Depression, the Hindenburg disaster, D Day, invention of Cheerios, and the first McDonald's. He became a smart-phone enthusiast, and loved his computer and Facebook.
