Carolyn Patten Sanders was born October 25, 1935 to Millard and Josie Belle
Patten. She passed away Tuesday, September 18, 2018 in Oklahoma City at the age
of 82.
Carolyn graduated from Carter High School in 1953. She attended Southwestern
Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, OK, graduating from Oklahoma
University in 1974 with a BS degree in education. She taught Vocational Home
Economics in Sweetwater and Merritt schools. She was chosen as "Teacher of the
Year" at Sweetwater in 1980 and at Merritt in 1993. Carolyn also worked several
years at the Beckham County Court Clerk’s office and as a precinct official for
the Beckham County Election Board.
A talented artist and a person with many interest and hobbies, her passion was
photography. She taught the profession at Southwestern in Sayre and at the
Outdoor Classroom north of Elk City. Carolyn took pictures for the Beckham
County Fair, Little League baseball groups, many individuals, weddings, and
family groups.
Carolyn was married on June 14, 1958 to Jerry Sanders. To this union two
children, Phil and Tina, were born. Throughout the years, the family lived in
various cities and states while Jerry worked for Mobil Oil Co. In 1976 the
family moved "home" to Sayre, OK where they settled on a farm nearby and Carolyn
began her teaching career. She was a member of the Oklahoma Vocational
Association, the American Vocational Association, Oklahoma Education
Association, and the National Education Association. Upon her retirement in
1999, she became a member of Oklahoma Retired Teachers Association. She was an
active member of the United Methodist Church in Sayre where she sang in the
choir many years.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Millard and Josie Belle Patten,
her in-laws, Harvey and Argie Sanders and Nana Lou Sanders, her sister-in-law,
Jeri Patten, her brother-in-law, Dean Burch, and her niece, Jeri Burch
Cocannouer.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry Sanders of Sayre, son Phil Sanders and
wife Laurie of Soldotna, Alaska, daughter Tina Blackketter and husband Lynn of
Leedey, OK. Grandchildren; Kyle Blackketter and wife Olivia, Clay Blackketter
and wife Christie, Lindsey Hill and husband Jake, and Ryan Sanders.
Great-granddaughters; Mila, Henley, and Cora Blackketter. Brothers, Noel Patten
and Dwayne Patten and wife Janita. Sisters, Nelda Burch, Ruth Harris and husband
Joe and Estelline Coffey and husband Jim. Brother-in-law, Wayne Sanders and wife
Shirley and numerous other family and friends.
Memorials in memory of Carolyn may be made to the charity of the donors choice.
