Funeral services for Tom E. Swopes were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 11, 1992 in the Savage Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Gary Harber and Rev. Roy Rowlan, officiating. Burial follwed in Fairlawn Cemetery, Elk City under the direction of Savage Funeral Home.

Thomas Edwin Swopes was born September 30, 1904 in Chelsea, Oklahoma; the son of Henry H. and Edity May Cravens Swopes and died December 9, 1992 at Hensley Nursing Home in Sayre, Oklahoma at the age of 88.

Tom attended schools in Tucumcari, New Mexico and at Midway. He married Mabel Elizabeth Selby on December 2, 1922 in Cheyenne, Oklahoma. Tom and Mabel celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on December 2, 1992 at their home at 609 N. Boone with family and friends.

Until 1947, Mr. Swopes was a farmer. He later purchased the laundry in Durham, which he operated for five years. From 1955 until 1963, he and his wife moved to Elk City. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Reydon.

Mr. Swopes' hobbies, reading, camping and traveling.

He is survived by his wife Mabel, of Elk City; two sons Thomas Frailey Swopes of Norman and Edwin "Jack" ,Stinnett, Texas 14 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; 17 great great grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents, one daughter, eight brothers and sisters.
