Oleta Russell was born May 20, 1921 in the Highway community
to Cuba and Neal Ward. She passed away July 31, 2016 at Elk City, Oklahoma at
the age of 95 years, 2 months and 11 days.
Oleta attended school at Highway. She later moved to California during the Great
Depression. She remained there for several years before returning to Oklahoma.
Oleta lived in the Highway community until moving to Elk City to make her home.
She owned and operated the 999 Cleaners in downtown Elk City for many years and
also had several rental house properties. Oleta was an accomplished seamstress
and loved doing water aerobics and Tai Chi. She volunteered with several
organizations in town including the Meals on Wheels Thrift Store, the Route 66
Museum and was a Pink Lady at the hospital.
Oleta was a long time member of the Elk City First Baptist Church where she
taught the 4 year olds for many years, worked in the office one day a week and
helped fold the church bulletins every week.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 husbands, a daughter, Dona
McGilberry.
She is survived by her daughter, Rita Owens and husband, Elbert, Clinton; her
grandchildren, Rev. Barry Owens and wife, Tiffani, Broken Arrow, OK, Dr. Kelly
McCoy and husband, Kevin, Edmond, OK, Rhealynne McGilberry, Elk City, OK, Mike
Shaw, Cheyenne, OK, Cindy Kovatana, Yukon, OK, Christy Russell, Clinton, OK,
Becky Russell, Weatherford, OK, Margy Spillers, Elk City, OK; 7 great
grandchildren, Lindsey, Lexi, Mitchell, Braxton, Sydney, Rachael, Sage, a great
great grandson, William, a very special friend of the family, Anita Wallace, and
a host of other relatives and friends.
