Kathleen Gay Monaghan was born April 5, 1952 in Pratt,
Kansas to Florence LaVerna and Elvis Frank Atchison. She passed away on Sunday,
February 19, 2017 at Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 64 years, 10 months and 14
days.
Kathleen grew up in Pratt, Kansas and began riding horses at the age of 7. After
she graduated from high school in 1970 she moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado
and was living there when she sold one of her horses. She called home and her
Dad told her he couldn't find the papers and that she needed to come home to
look. It was only after several years of marriage that she and Marvin discovered
that he just wanted her to come home to meet her future husband. While she was
home she actually sold Marvin a saddle and his Dad a horse over the phone. She
was married to Marvin LeRoy Monaghan at Haviland, Kansas on December 8, 1979.
They lived in Trousdale, Kansas where they farmed, trained horses and Kathleen
worked at the lumber yard in Greensburg, Kansas. Marvin worked for Halliburton
so they lived in Kansas, Wyoming and Montana. They later moved to Farmington,
New Mexico and she attended San Juan Community College where she took a number
of art classes and they moved to Elk City in 2007 to make their home.
Kathleen loved her horses and competed in a number of shows. While in Kansas she
helped family and neighbors with their cattle. They would often take trail rides
with their children and friends where she enjoyed eating around the campfire.
She was also an accomplished painter and enjoyed working with pottery.
She is a member of Second and Adams church of Christ, Elk City, OK.
Kathleen’s family includes her husband, Marvin; 1 daughter, Joleen Daniele
