Funeral services for John J. Phelps, pioneer settler of this country, were held Wednesday afternoon at the First Baptist church with Rev. George C. Hutto conducting the final rites.
Mr. Phelps died Tuesday, April 28, at a local hospital following a two week's illness from pneumonia. He was a pioneer farmer of this area, having filed on a homestead three miles northeast of the city. He had retired from farm work and resided at 409 North Main street.
He is survived by his widow, four sons and two daughters, J.W. Phelps and G. C. Phelps of Delevan (actually Delavan), Kansas; C.W. Phelps and C.J. Phelps, Elk City; Mrs. A. A. Austin, Elk City; and Mrs. Ruben Wheelden, (actually Wheeldon) Marshall, Ill.
Mr. Phelps was born February 15, 1851 at Salem, North Carolina.
Burial was in Fairlawn cemetery.
