Mittie Izera Hawkins Bonner © Cheyenne Star 28 Dec 1961 Submitted by: Wanda Purcell
Mittie Izera Hawkins Bonner, who was born on August 16, 1894, at Rayland, Texas departed this life on December 18, 1961, at Clinton, Oklahoma.
Last rite ceremonies were conducted at the Presbyterian Church in Clinton, Oklahoma, and brief graveside services were held in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Elk City, the place of interment.
Mittie Bonner was a daughter of R. H. Hawkins and Luna Idell Hawkins who were early day Texans and prominent pioneers of Roger Mills County.
Mittie, who was affectionately known as "RAB" was survived by her son, John Bonner of Dallas, Texas, and by her two brothers and three sisters: M. N. Hawkins of Ninnekah, Oklahoma, Frank Hawkins, Durham, Oklahoma, Sadie Hawkins, of Verden, Oklahoma, Pauline Barnes of McAlester, Oklahoma and Ruth Holmes of Hanford, California.
She was predeceased by her late husband, J. M. Bonner, who died on October 22, 1960 at Clinton, Oklahoma.
There are still those who remember Mittie Hawkins as a school girl enrolled in the Square Top School and later as a student in the Southwestern State Normal College at Weatherford. Still more remember her as the young school teacher who served as principal of the South Antelope and Melrose schools in Roger Mills County, both districts being now non-existent. The deceased also taught school in Beckham and Carter counties.
In more recent years the deceased was perhaps best known for her untiring and constructive work in the church of her choice.
Mittie Hawkins was one of those rare individuals of uncommon intellect and wisdom; her sense of refinement was inate. The influence of those qualities, which she so abundantly possessed, and of which she shared so freely, shall long remain as marker for others who may come this way.
