Kenneth E. Whinery was born September 20, 1929 in Canute, Oklahoma to Olive March (Richmond) and Richard Samuel Whinery. He passed away October 1, 2019 in Sayre, Oklahoma at the age of 90 years and 11 days.

Kenneth grew up in the Retrop community where he attended school graduating in 1947. After graduation he did farm work and went on wheat harvest until 1948. He then furthered his education at Oklahoma Baptist University. Kenneth met Athalie Rollins while in college and they were later married on August 2, 1952 in Gotebo, Oklahoma. They moved to Oklahoma City where he attended the University of Oklahoma Medical School. After graduation from Medical School in 1956, he was drafted into the United States Navy, being stationed at Moffett Field in Sunnyvale, California. While in the Navy he obtained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After his discharge in 1958 they moved to Yosemite National Park where he worked as a physician at the clinic and hospital. In 1960, Kenneth and Athalie moved to Sayre where he started his medical practice. He was the Sayre Mayor from 1970-1980 and was an active member of the Sayre Rotary club where he received the Paul Harris Fellow award. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in Colorado and Alaska, skiing, tennis and gardening.

He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Athalie.

He is survived by his 3 children, Kent Whinery and wife, Sandy, Sayre, OK; Bret Whinery and wife, Barbara, Enid, OK; and Tess Chambers and husband, Mark, Arcadia, OK; 6 grandchildren, Landon Whinery, Dallas, TX; Morgan Whinery and husband, Ben Habern, Dallas, TX; Kevin Frantz and wife, AiLien, Oklahoma City, OK; Kendra Bolay and husband, Bryan, Perry, OK; Jacob Whinery, Enid, OK; and Kylie Chambers, Arcadia, OK. He also had seven great grandchildren: Tiana, Jason, Bryce, Emery, Tenna, Maylie and Aisley; his brother, Laverne Whinery, Sayre, OK and a host of other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials in his name be made to 4RKids, 710 Overland Trail, Enid, OK 73703 a nonprofit organization supporting children and adults with developmental disabilities.

Services will be held Saturday, October 5, 2019, 10:30 AM at Sayre First Baptist Church officiated by Peter Parker and Tom Cooksey.

Burial will be in the Sayre-Doxey Cemetery under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service. Condolences can be made online at www.whineryfs.com
