The funeral for Virgil Calvin Wells, 84, who died Thursday at Bass
Baptist Hospital after a sudden illness, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at
Garriott Road Church of Christ with Jim Bullock officiating.
A second service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sayre Church
of Christ with Jack Cox officiating. Burial will be in Sayre-Doxey
Cemetery at Sayre under the direction of Brown Funeral Home of Enid.
Wells was born October 6, 1905, in Kenefic to Arthur and Laura Hall
Wells and attended Kenefic High School. On March 28, 1937, he married
Anne Fullerton at Sayre. He served in the U.S. Army Engineer Corps in
New Guinea during World War ll. After his discharge, he worked for the
State Highway Department as a construction foreman for eight years. He
graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor of arts degree
in journalism, later working for newspapers in Buffalo, Chandler and Elk
City as news editor. He then worked at Enid News and Eagle as editor of
editorials, retiring in 1976. H was a member of the Garden Club and
attended the yearly reunion of the 1007 Engineer Group. He was active
in the Garriott Road Church of Christ, a member of the First Family of
Twin Territories and the Enid Rotary Club, serving as editor of the
Rotary Bulletin 25 years. He also had perfect attendance and was known
as Mr. Rotary.
Surviving are his wife; two sisters, Artel Goodwin of Atascadero
California and Lorene Cunningham of Salinas California.
He was preceded in death by one brother.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the church or charity
of choice.
