Harold Denby Jones, age 91, passed away peacefully at Elk
City Nursing Center on November 11, 2015 which was Veteran's Day. He was a WWII
veteran of the United States Navy having served in Okinawa, Japan as a
Machinist's Mate 3rd Class (CB) V-6 SV.
Harold was a "leap year" baby, born February 29, 1924 in Carter, OK to James
Judson and Mollie (Cummings) Jones. He was the youngest of their children and
had a twin brother who died at birth. Two doctors were present for the delivery
of the twins, Dr. Denby and Dr. Mitchell. Harold recalled that as a child he was
sometimes called "DM" Jones (the initials of those two doctors) and his middle
name was from Dr. Denby.
As a young man Harold worked as a ranch hand for J. L. Estes in Carter, OK. At
the age of 30, he moved to Kansas City, MO (where his brother Sam and his family
were living) and worked for Ford Motor Company in an auto assembly plant for 17
years. In 1971, he returned to Oklahoma, settling in Sayre, OK near his brother
Lelon.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 7 years, Margaret "Margie" Louise
(James); his parents, James Judson and Mollie E. Jones, and his siblings
Charlie, Nettie (Roles), Daniel, Christopher, Lelon and Samuel.
Harold never had children but he is survived by several nieces and nephews, many
of whom referred to him as "their favorite uncle", including the four children
of his brother Samuel: Daniel Jones and wife, Jan of Birmingham, AL; Loretta
Jones of Birmingham, AL; Deborah Jones and wife, Donna Lovett of Minneapolis,
MN; and Jeanette Jones of Horton of Florence, AL. He is also survived by his
cousin Evelyn Roles Normand of Carter, OK and Darlene Roles of Elk City, OK
(wife of his nephew Fred Roles) and many other family and friends. He was dearly
loved and will be greatly missed!
A celebration of Harold's life will be held at a later date and emails to the
family can be sent to debjones72@me.com. Arrangements are under the direction of
Whinery-Savage Funeral Service, Elk City, OK.
