Ann Ellis was born on April 14,1913 at Hollis, Oklahoma to
Joel and Emma Worley. Her family moved to Colorado when she was a baby. In
July, 1915 they moved back to Oklahoma traveling in a covered wagon going
approximately 23 miles per day. Ann grew up in Roger Mills County, going to
school at Bellview and Durham. She is the third child of eight children.
She married John Ray Ellis on December 15th, 1930. They lived in Roger Mills
County until 1937 when they moved to Colorado. In 1951 they
moved back to Cheyenne and then to Sayre in 1952.
Ann started cooking in restaurants right after
she moved to Sayre. Those who have eaten at Hill’s Cafe, Ray’s Drive-In or
the truck stop have eaten her cooking. She worked at the Retirement Center
on 5th Street for several years. She also made pies for Helen Dyson’s
restaurant. She retired at the age of 92. Ann was well known for her pies
all over western Oklahoma.
Quilting wass one of Ann’s passions. In 1998 she won the August Golden
Thimble Award from the Daily Oklahoman. Ann enjoyed sewing and at one time
did alterations for clothing stores. After Ann retired she started drawing
as her hobby.
She was preceded in death by her parents,
infant twins, a son, Teddy Ellis, a granddaughter, Ann Margaret Davis
McFarlane, and her brothers and sisters, Orien, Willa Mae Taylor, Jessie
Creech, Oleta Spurlin and Joel.
She is survived by her children, Bea Ellis, Bernice Davis and husband Bill,
Dale Rogers and husband Mike all of Moore, Oklahoma, Jackie Ellis and wife
Lucille,
Albuquerque, NM and Johnny Ellis, Sayre, OK; grandchildren, Tammie Ellis,
Albuquerque, NM, Jay Rogers and wife, Stepheny, Moore OK, John Rogers,
Tulsa, OK; great grandchildren, Jack Ellis, Cooper Rogers, Carly Rogers,
Meryl Ann McFarlane; 1 sister, Virgie Lea Wallace, Edmond, OK: 1 brother,
Carl Lavern Worley, Mustang, OK and a host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside services will be held Friday, September 5, 2014, 10:00 A.M. at the
Sayre-Doxey Cemetery. Burial at Sayre-Doxey Cemetery under the direction of
Rose Chapel Funeral Service. Condolences can be made online at
