Whinery Funeral Service
Sayre, OK
(permission granted)
Marie grew up in Oklahoma City. She married Melvin Ashley in 1979 and had 2 daughters, Linda and Christiana. She married James Crook on September 12, 1983 and had 3 more children, Juanita, Carlita and Jason. They made their home in the Erick/Hext area. During this time Marie and James made sure all 5 children, that were in the home, worked on the family farm as a unit. As the children got older they also began to work at the family business, James Crook CPA, in Sayre. After James passed away in September 2006, Marie began operating as Crook’s Tax and Accounting LLC which she owned and managed until 2009. She then began working for Varnell and Texoma Powerline Companies up until 2015. At that time, she took up working for Merrifield’s Office Supply from 2015 to 2016, then returned to Varnell Powerline until her passing. Marie was a Mother. She may have only had 5 children of her own but she raised and loved so many others. Marie’s children and grandchildren were her world and she always said, “I have great kids.” Family was everything to Marie. You never went into her house without a child or grandchild there. She enjoyed her daily lunch dates with her kids, and often had unplanned supper with them. Marie loved just showing up and spending quality time with her family, even if you showed up and weren’t family, now you’re family! All were welcomed and everyone called her Nana. She loved shopping and going on vacations. Marie had a special kind of passion for big purses, she couldn’t ever have too many. All of her vacations were planned with family, who she considered her whole world. She was a taxi driver to her 9 grandchildren. She drove them anywhere they needed or wanted to go. She picked them up almost daily to take them to get something for lunch and then would go back a few hours later to pick them up to take them home, so they wouldn’t have to ride the bus. Marie loved to laugh and joke with her kids, even if the joke was on her. She was someone that could do something crazy, funny, or even sometimes humiliating and always laugh at herself and tell others of her mishap. Marie was a fierce lover of Christ and had a faith that could not be shaken. She was someone you could always call on to discuss the bible and help you understand the scripture. Marie was a woman who spoke her mind, whether you liked it or not and whether you agreed with her or not. She would let you know what you should have said or the way you should have done something. Marie was ALWAYS right. She was a hugger. She loved giving hugs to people no matter if she just met you or if she knew you her whole life. She was also a TERRIBLE driver!! None of her kids allowed her to drive them anywhere, she scared the daylights out of all of them. She was often reminded that the gas and brake WERE pedals, NOT buttons.
Although Marie is no longer here with us, her memory and legacy will be kept alive through her family and friends she leaves behind. She is survived by 4 daughters: Linda and husband Dustin Denney of Sayre, OK, Christiana Crotinger of Sayre, OK, Juanita and husband David Easter of Erick, OK, Carlita and fiance` Randall Blagg of Sayre, OK, 1 son: Jason Crook and wife Brittany of Sayre, OK, 2 step-daughters: Delynna and husband Russell Kelley of Texarkana, AR, Anita and husband Frank Scalet of Round Rock, TX, 1 step-son: James and wife Teresa Crook of New Castle, OK, 8 siblings: Carolyn and husband J.C.
