Merieta Fay Swagerty was born May 26, 1938 in Erick, Oklahoma to Grace Gertrude and Hansford Lloyd Swagerty. She passed away March 27, 2016 at Amarillo, Texas at the age of 77 years, 10 months and 1 day.
Merieta grew up in Delhi and attended Delhi schools until her senior year. She moved with her father and step mother to Shamrock where she graduated from Shamrock High School in 1956. After graduation she worked at Kress Variety Store in Amarillo, TX before moving to California where she began her career in catering. Merieta continued to live in California until 2000 when she moved to Moore, Oklahoma to be close to family. Merieta found employment at Easy Mart and quickly became friends with her boss Robert Jensing who became like her second son. She continued with Easy Mart until October of 2009 when a stroke forced her retirement. Merieta enjoyed traveling and going to New Mexico and spending time with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Gregory Scott Swagerty; brothers, Hansford, Gerald and A.L. Swagerty; 3 sisters, Thelma Lawler, Bernice Coffey and Elgevia Burrows; an infant sister, Velma Swagerty.
She is survived by her brother-in-law, Forrest Burrows and wife, Willie, Amarillo, TX; sister-in-law, Phyllis Swagerty, Fletcher, OK; niece and caregiver, Brenda Burrows, Amarillo, TX; 18 other nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside services will be held March 30, 2016 at 11:00 am at Delhi Cemetery officiated by Brandon Burrows. Burial will be at Delhi Cemetery under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service. Condolences can be made online at www.whineryfs.com
