Virgal R. Shipman was born September 27, 1926 in Sweetwater to Matilda and Thomas Shipman and died Wednesday October 6, 1999 in the Great Plains Regional Medical Center at the age of 73.Virgal grew up in the New Liberty community where he attended school.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served towards the end of World War II.
After his discharge, he returned to Sayre before being recalled and serving his country during the Korean War.
He later worked on a ranch in Nebraska before going to work in the oilfields in west Texas. After his retirement, he made his home in Sayre.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Lee Ray Shipman, Audie Shipman; one sister Florence Brimer; and one brother, Luther Shipman.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m., Friday at the Carter Cemetery officiated by Stan Baker. Arrangements are under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service.
Survivors include one son, Donnie Tiller of Sayre; two sisters, Mamie Criswell and Lillian Farrel, both of Sayre; one brother, Ralph Shipman of Childress, Texas; two grandchildren; and numerous friends.
