Joyce R. Howell was born September 29, 1931 in Sayre, Oklahoma at her Aunt's home to Fern and Elzy Howell. She passed away September 14, 2017 at Sayre, Oklahoma at the age of 85 years, 11 months, and 15 days.

She was raised at Mayfield, Oklahoma and attended Mayfield and Sweetwater schools. She was 17 years old and married Earlon G. Shirley on December 19, 1948. They live on the Shirley farm on the Red River. Pam was born in 1950 - they move to Borger, Texas, where Earlon worked at the gas plant. In 1952 Darrell Lee was born and only survived 10 days. It was a very heart breaking time for this little family. They moved back to Sweetwater in 1954, where Cindy was born in 1955. Earlon farmed, and worked at the cotton gin. In 1955, they move back to the Shirley family farm. In 1968, they move to Erick. Earlon was still working in the cotton gin. The girls were raised, so Joyce and her best friend, Mary, decided to take a typing class at Sayre College and that started her bookkeeping career. She first worked for Dr. Ward as a bookkeeper. In 1975 they moved to Memphis, Texas where Earlon ginned cotton and Joyce tagged trailers and kept books. In 1984, they moved to Tahoka, Texas, where Joyce got to stay home and play with her grandbabies. In 1996 they moved back to Erick, Oklahoma and planned to enjoy retirement. Earlon got sick with ALS and passed away in 2000. Joyce live in Elkwood Living Center in Elk City until she moved to Hensley Nursing Home where she lived for 21/2 years. Joyce loved shopping, spending time with the kids and grandkids, water sky, riding horses, cooking, and country music. She modeled for dress shops in Tahoka, Texas, which she loved the attention.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; 1 son; 1 brother, Elmer Lee Howell, and 1 sister Lovell Hill.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Pam Jefferson and husband, Carl, Erick, Oklahoma, Cindy Alvarado and husband, Rick, Tahoka, Texas; 2 granddaughters, Jennifer Holland of Erick, Oklahoma, Jessica McKinney and husband, Jeffery of Lubbock, Texas; 2 great grandchildren, Cody of Erick, Oklahoma, and BlaYze of Lubbock, Texas; 1 sister-in-law, Sharon Shirley of Krum, Texas; her best friend, Mary Oren of Erick, Oklahoma; lots of much loved nieces and nephews, and many friends.

The family request that memorial donations be made to the ALS and Alzheimers Association.
