Charles Gaut Davis

Charles Gaut Davis departed this life on January 20, 1979, at
the age
of 83 in the Cheyenne Memorial Hospital after a short illness. One
son, Scott, of Phoenix, Arizona, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 23, 1979 at 3:00 p.m. in
the Buffalo Bible Baptist Church with Rev. Sanford Cole of Canadian,
Texas and Rev. Eddie Overstreet of Reydon officiating.
Sam C. Davis, a brother, was in charge of the music. Singers included
Clara Lou McGuire, Edith Hildebrand, Howard and Inez Fuchs, Inez Shirley,
Dora Jean Woods and Lillie Mae Davis.
Grandsons and 2 great grandsons served as pallbearers.
Charles Gaut Davis, son of the late L.H. and Sara Jane Davis, was born October
22, 1895 in Double Springs, Winston County, Alabama. He was converted at an
early age and was a member of the Union Grave Baptist Church. He married Lula
E. Hicks of Winston County, Alabama in 1915. Nine children, 5 sons and 4
daughters were born to this union.
The family moved to the Buffalo, Oklahoma community in 1920 and Gaut was a
faithful member of the Buffalo Bible Baptist Church. In later years they
moved to Oklahoma City where he was employed by The Rose Hill Cemetery until
retirement. Gaut and Lula moved to Reydon this past year to be near a daughter,
Dessie, who has been caring for her parents in their failing health. Gaut
joined the Reydon First Baptist Church this year and attended when his health
permitted.
He is survived by his wife, Lula of the home and eight children. They
include Lester, of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Dessie Burks, of Reydon, Mrs.
Glennie Ellis, of Hobart, Orvis, of West Palm Beach, Florida, Mrs.
Earlene Hughes of Booneville, Arkansas, Vercia, of Oklahoma City, Mrs.
Lola Faye Burks of Dumas, Texas and Carl Eugene of Oklahoma City, Three
brothers, Spurgeon of Sikeston, Missouri, Sam C. of Sweetwater, Frank of
Mayfield; one sister, Mrs. Inez Shirley of Borger, Texas, and one step-sister,
Elsie Doak of Dumas, Texas; 24 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and a
host of relatives and friends.
Burial was in the Buffalo Cemetery under the direction of Rose chapel
Funeral Service.
