Verla Weeks, 99 year old resident of Gate, Oklahoma died Sunday, May 11, 2014 in the Fairview Fellowship Home in Fairview, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2014 in the United Methodist Church in Gate, Oklahoma. Burial will be in the Forgan Cemetery in Forgan, Oklahoma.
Verla Marie (Evans) Weeks was born January 25, 1915 on the family ranch at Mocane, Oklahoma to Everett and Minta (Bailey) Evans. She was the second born of six children and completed her first eight grades of education at Mocane Country School in 7 years. She then attended Forgan High School, graduating with the class of 1932.
After graduation, she went to work for Mobil Oil and Gas Company in Beaver, Oklahoma and worked there until she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Oliver H. Weeks on June 9, 1935. She and Oliver moved to Wichita, Kansas where Oliver was employed, but eventually returned back to a farm northeast of Forgan. In 1939, she and Oliver purchased a farm South of Gate, Oklahoma and resided there until 2012 when she moved to the Fairview Fellowship Home in Fairview. The highlight of Verla and Oliver"s life together was the birth of identical twin sons born on May 26, 1949. Verla enjoyed being with her loving husband of 60 and one-half years, and they always did things together. Where you saw Verla, you usually could find Oliver close by. They were not only husband and wife, but best friends and buddies.
Verla got a lot of enjoyment watching her twin sons, Gary and Lary participate in sporting events, and always supported her family in any way possible. She was a generous and loving wife and mother, and thought the world of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and all of their accomplishments. Verla was a very hard working and dedicated home maker that involved so many responsibilities, but she always met them head-on with perseverance and patience. One of her passions for the lively-hood of the family was caring and tending to her 1,000 head chicken farm. She sold eggs to Ideal Food Store in Beaver and also to the independent food store in Forgan for many years. She and Oliver taught their twin sons how to work and the responsibilities of life and family. Verla never complained about anything; she took what life dealt her and made the best of it. Two of the highlights of her later years was her surprise 95th birthday celebration which caught her totally off guard! The other was that she attended her 80th high school class reunion along with one other classmate. She was a wonderful example to all who knew her and gave her life to Christ in 1935 in Wichita, Kansas.
She was a member of the Gate United Methodist Church and loved attending worship and singing events there. She enjoyed life to the fullest!
She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Minta Evans, her beloved husband of 60 and one-half years, Oliver H. Weeks; two sisters Doris Funk and Leola Harris; three brothers, Richard Evans, Harold Evans and Karl Evans.
Verla leaves as her survivors her twin sons Gary Weeks and wife Charlotte of Mooeland; Lary Weeks and wife Roxanne of Aline; her grandchildren, Scott Weeks and wife Meegan of Aubrey, Texas; Bridge O"Neil and husband Cole of Medford; also her great grandchildren Brendon and Kamryn Weeks; Brody and Kynlee O"Neil; step-grandson Rod Potts of Mooreland; great step-grandson Rodney Potts.
