Marcg 7, 1925 ~ May 21, 2025

Robert "Tot" Mahata Calvert, age 100, a lifelong Atoka, OK resident. He was born on the banks of Muddy Boggy River near Lehigh on Saturday, March 7, 1925, to Robert Bud and Effie Hotama (Williams) Calvert. Tot passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 at his home in Atoka, OK. He attended Wards Chapel School and later graduated High School. Tot was a rancher and cowboy, he worked for Wilson Meat Company in the 1950's, Abe Zeigel Hardware in Atoka, OK, Mullendore Ranch as a horse trainer in 1957, and a guard at McLeod and MacAlford Correctional facilities, Monroe MacNally and Don Loftis, and retired from Boggy Depot State Park after 15 years. He married Wanda Lorene (Waggoner) on Thursday, December 12th, 1946 at Sherman, TX. They celebrated over 78 years of marriage before her passing on March 15, 2025. Tot and Wanda would carry a bale of cotton to the gin on the wagon. Tot's fun thing was helping Wanda roll popcorn for her specialty popcorn balls to give for Halloween treats for families and kids, also helping with pecan pies, he said the syrup had to be just right. Tot's love of his life, after Wanda, his children and watching his grandchildren grow up, was his horse. He would ride for miles to see his friends and neighbors. Sometimes Wanda would get worried and have to call looking for him. One time Wanda called Raygan to go look for Tot and Raygan said, Granny he is in bed. His first horse was named "Sport". He lived his best life on his horse. He said, "A man's best friend was his horse". He loved the Atoka Trail Riders Club. Couldn't hardly wait for the trail rides, parades and rodeos. Before Tot married Wanda he would ride his horse to Mac Carr's corner, tie him up, catch a ride to town with a 'can of cream' to help his family. His dog would wait with the horse until his return. He said the cream would bring about $2.00, a lot of money back then. Tot being the "Legendary Storyteller of his time", always had a funny story to tell and make people laugh, with the unique and funny tales of his stories. Tot was called, the "Pillar of his community". The stories came from his real life experiences. The real history of Atoka County and Wards Chapel will now be gone. It was said, Tot is a social butterfly who everybody likes. Tot's hobbies were selling his books, socializing and making halters for his friends.

Tot is survived by his children, Jessie Marie Kight and husband Richard of Kingsland, TX, Robert Darrell Calvert and wife Malinda of Wards Chapel, OK, Forrest Calvert of Wards Chapel, OK, Susan Calvert of Atoka, OK; 6 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; along with two nephews, Don Fink of Oklahoma City, OK and Lonnie Fink of Oklahoma City, OK and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.

Tot was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Bud and Effie Hotama (Williams) Calvert; wife, Wanda Lorene Calvert; grandson, Raygan Calvert; sister, Anna Jo Fink and husband Lon; grandparents, Edward and Luticia Calvert; great grandparents, Emmaline and Rams.
