LaWanda Ruth (Mason) Mabery was born on August 19, 1932 in Atoka, Oklahoma to Floyd H. and Vina G. (Henegar) Mason and went home to be with her Lord and Savior on March 9, 2014 at her home in Durant at the age of 81.

“Chappy” as she was well known graduated from Atoka High School and received her bachelor’s degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. She devoted her life to helping people in need serving the Law Enforcement community in Atoka County and with the Durant Police Department since 1997. She received her Basic Certification through the International Conference of Police Chaplains. She was a member of the Oklahoma Women in Law Enforcement and past Secretary-Treasurer of the Oklahoma Police Chaplain’s Association. In 2000 she received the Chaplain of the Year Award by Oklahoma Baptists and then in 2003 she was presented the award for Excellency in Chaplaincy from the Southeast Central Region of ICPC. She has also served as a Chaplain for the Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief Team. She considered Public Safety officials as part of her family and she will be dearly loved and missed by all.

“Chappy” was preceded in death by her parents; husband Claude Mabery; brother Bruce Mason and nephew Stephen Mason.

“Chappy” is survived by her children Bob Collier of Caddo, OK, Rhea Moore and Jessie Carlile of Caddo, OK and Dena Johnson and husband David of Rowlett, TX; granddaughters Rene Baker and husband Jay, Roxxann Sczepanik and husband Christopher, Dixie Clemons and husband Jon, Lacey Hutson and Cooper Welch and Shawn Collier; great grandchildren Noah, Dakota, Christopher, Wyatt, Hailey, Jaycee, Kacey, Kaylee, Kaylee and Cambree; niece and nephew Carter and Shelby; and members of Bryan and Atoka County Public Safety Officials.

A celebration of “Chappy’s” life will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Durant. Rev. BJ Tapley and Rev. Bill Ledbetter will officiate. Interment will follow in Green Meadows Cemetery in Atoka with the Durant Police Department Honor Guard serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home on Tuesday evening at 6:00 P.M. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.brownsfuneralservice.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Brown’s Funeral Service, Durant.
