JET — Emery Lemuel Metcalf Jr. “E.L.,” went to be with his Lord on March 10, 2015, 10 days after having suffered a stroke.

E.L. was born June 8, 1926, to father, Emery Lemuel Metcalf and mother, Jesse Emily Lemmon. He was born in the very home in which he was to spend the rest of his life. On Nov. 15, 1947, he married Betty Jo Jordan of Jet. They entered 67 wonderful years together of farming, ranching and family life on the Metcalf home place.

Service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2015, at United Methodist Church in Jet. Interment will follow at Timberlake Cemetery, with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Helena. Viewing will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, March 13, at the funeral home. (www.lanmanmemorials.com) Memorials may be given to Jet Lions Club or National MS Society through the funeral home.

E.L. and Betty’s family life always centered around their Christian faith. One way E.L. demonstrated his love for Jesus was his devotion to church and the body of Christ. Through the years, he served as youth leader, board member, board of trustees member and teacher. He coordinated the ministry of the Wild Wood Chapel at Salt Plains Lake for 32 years. E.L. served many needs of the community for over 50 years, devoting many volunteer hours to bring to the community such projects as the Jet swimming pool, tennis courts, Jet Memorial Park and Prairie Grass Project. He served faithfully in offices of the Lions Club, the Farmers Coop Board and was the community blood drive chairman for 20 years. In 2008, E.L. was the recipient of the KanOkla Community Service Award, which acknowledged his significant contributions to the life of his community. He also served on the committee that received special recognition from the State Chamber of Commerce for community involvement.

E.L. was always fascinated with flying and became a pilot at age 65. He loved flying his Kitfox plane, which he co-built with his son. He also loved improving and caring for his beloved home place, securing the official state bestowed title “Centennial Homestead” in 1993.

His tireless commitment to work on the farm and service to his church and community pale, however, to the fervor and depth of love he gave to his wife and children, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His deep love for His Savior, Jesus Christ, gave him compassion and a sincerity of concern for each person in his family that touched their lives deeply at each encounter with him. He thought about them carefully, prayed for them diligently, served them unselfishly, gave to them generously, inspired them endlessly and left them with a legacy of truth, integrity, faith and hope.

E.L. is predeceased by his mother and father, Emery and Jesse Metcalf, brothers and their wives, Dale and Mabel Metcalf, Earl and Francis Metcalf, and Ivan and Florene Metcalf. He also was preceded in death by his sons-in-law, Monty Rice and Layne Zander.

He is survived by a brother, Donald and wife Florence Metcalf, and sister, Jessie Mary and husband Cecil Reinhart, all of Jet. Betty Jo Metcalf went to be with her Lord on October 27, 2021. Betty was born August 20, 1927, to father George S. Jordan and mother Esther Lee Fleming.

On Nov. 15, 1947, she married Emery L. Metcalf of Jet, Oklahoma. They entered sixty-seven wonderful years together of farming, ranching, and family life on the Metcalf home place.

Betty and E.L.'s family life was always centered on their Christian faith. Betty demonstrated her commitment to the body of Christ by serving faithfully in the Jet United Methodist Church. Some of her areas of service included United Methodist Women, Pastor Parish Committee, Administrative Board, Education Department, Youth Leader, Sunday School teacher, choir member and creator of the Puppet Ministry. She was also one of the founders of the Wild Wood Chapel at Salt Plains Lake. In addition to her roles at the church, she was employed as the secretary of Jet School for several years, then later as a second grade teacher at Jet-Nash Elementary School in Nash. After moving to Enid in 2016, Betty enjoyed volunteering at Loaves and Fishes NWOK.

Betty and E.L.'s home was built in 1907 on land staked in 1893. With creativity and a desire to cultivate a welcoming home, Betty worked tirelessly to ensure the historic farmhouse always felt inviting to family and friends. Her home was the destination of every major holiday for her family. She prepared food, games, and activities that nurtured relationships and cemented the family's bond. Her graciousness as a hostess created an atmosphere with the perfect mix of fun and relaxation. Family always left expectantly waiting for the next gathering. Those times together rooted the family in rich, remarkable memories with one another and gratitude to their Heavenly Father.

Betty had a unique connection with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She cared deeply to know them well and understand their interests. She graciously served the grandchildren who spent the summers working on the farm, and she never tired of an opportunity to hear about their lives. Every new wife, husband, or baby brought into the "clan" was received with sincere openness and genuine love. She embroidered sets of tea towels and pillowcases for each household as well as quilts for every grandchild and great-grandchild.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband E.L. in 2015; parents, George and Esther Lee Jordan; a brother and his wife, James J. and Louella Jordan; and a sister, Linda Lee Jordan. She was also preceded in death by her sons-in-law, Layne Zander and Monty Rice.
