Short Spring Cemetery


The memorial service for Terry Lee Strickland, 68, of Alva, will be 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at First United Methodist Church, Alva. The Rev. Terry Martindale will officiate. Burial will be in Short Springs Cemetery. Arrangements are by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home.

He was born Dec. 14, 1941, in Alva to Leo and Lura Horner Strickland and died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, in Enid.

He grew up in Alva and began his career in aviation as a child at Strickland Aviation, alongside his father. He earned his commercial license at age 17, his flight instructor’s license at 19 and at age 23, became the youngest FAA flight examiner in the Southwest Region.

His career included flight crew for Braniff Airlines, captain of Merlin Metholiner for United Supermarkets, captain of citation and saberliner for Love’s Country stores, captain of Challenger for Lamanco, instructor for American Airlines, operated Alva Airlines, a scheduled air carrier from Alva to Fairview to Oklahoma City, operated and owned Ardmore and Duncan airports, operated airport in Brownwood, Texas, provided air crew and managerial services through Strickland Aviation in Alva.

He returned to Alva as a semi-retired pilot and continued to do air shows, aerobatics, flying and smoke-flying. Many of his historical artifacts are on display at the Alva Airport.

He was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Alva.

Surviving are his wife, Mary McFadden Strickland; his children, Toni Day of Frisco, Texas, and Tad Strickland of Galena, Ohio; stepchildren, Allison New-field of Broken Arrow, Katie Raffaele of Frisco, Texas, Marc Shryoer of Bartlesville and Pamela Buchanan of Bartlesville; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister. Memorials may be made through the funeral home to First United Methodist Church, Alva Youth Department.
