Leland Clester German

Leland Clester German was born February 3, 1935 in Anthony, Kansas, one of 9 children born to Clester and Mary (Hess) German. He was the only one that was born in a hospital and the only one without a Dr. in attendance. He was raised in the Manchester area and graduated from Amorita High School in 1953.

On April 4, 1954, Leland was united in marriage with Carina Marlene Sluder. They made their home in Anthony and were blessed with two children: Jimmy and LeAnn.

Leland went west with a harvest crew after graduating from high school then he worked as a car salesman at Fankhauser Motors and worked until the shop closed. He and Jake Benson went into a farming partnership. He and Marlene moved to rural Anthony in 1968 and then to rural Manchester in 1988. His love for cars prompted him to open a used car lot in Manchester while continuing to farm.

On November 24, 2012, Leland passed away at his home in rural Manchester at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 21 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Arnold and Lawrence; three sisters, Leola Benson, Lenora German and Betty German; and brothers-in-law, Jacob Benson, Jon Hodson and John Carden.

Leland will be deeply missed by his wife, Marlene of Manchester; his son, Jimmy and wife Brenda of Attica; his daughter, LeAnn Hodson and husband David of Anthony; four grandchildren: Austin German and wife Julie, Stephanie Hodson, Ginger Steggles and husband Mark, and Elisha German and fiancé Ross Downing; 7 great grandchildren; three sisters: Florence Carden of Kansas City, MO, Lucille Hodson of Wichita, and Marjorie Clepper and husband Glenn of Byron, OK; his faithful sidekick a black Pomeranian, Bear; several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Anthony with Mr. Eddie Barber officiating. "Wind Beneath My Wings" recorded by Roger Whitaker was played.

Burial was in Rosedale Cemetery, Manchester, Oklahoma. Honorary casket bearers were Bill Benson, Dan Aaron, Tim Jantz, Richard Hendrick, Danny Nakvinda, Aaron Williams, Roy Hess, Glenn Clepper and many others to numerous to mention. Casket bearers were Austin German, Jerry Schmitz, Mark Hodson, Monty Hartman, Michael Hodson, Lynn Sluder, Glynn Sluder and Andy Hendrick.

Memorials in memory of Leland may be made to the Town of Manchester Community Building or to the Rosedale Cemetery and may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Prairie Rose Funeral Homes, Inc., 602 E. Main St. ~ Anthony, KS 67003, was in charge of arrangements.
