ENID — S.C. "Sonny" Fischer, 82, was born March 20, 1928, in Springfield, Ill., to Otto and Elsie Marie Miller Fischer. He died Thursday, June 17, 2010, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center, Enid.
Sonny and his family moved to Jet when he was six months old. He attended Jet School and started farming at an early age. He truly loved farming and ranching every day of his life. Harvest was his favorite time of year and he loved working on combines.
He married Jennie Guffy Feb. 8, 1948. They resided and raised their five children in the home his grandfather built in 1910. Sonny served on the local co-op board, Methodist Church Board and 50 years on the Pleasant View Cemetery Board. Sonny took great pride in his work at the cemetery and also served as sexton. For 21 years he drove a school bus.
Sonny is survived by his wife, Jennie, of the home; children, Collene and Charles Leatherman of Alva, Cathlene and Ben Painter of Enid, Randy and Brenda Fischer of Foley, Minn., Carolyn and L.D. Rapp of Enid and Bryan and Mona Fischer of Jet. Grandchildren include Blake Erikson, Brooke Erikson, Ryan Painter and wife, Kami, Cara Stone and husband, Corey, Trisha Ruyle and fiancé Bruce Pellow, Dr. Erin Rapp, Kayla Rapp, Paige Fischer and Drew Fischer. Sonny also is survived by his sister, Lee DeVore and husband A.D. of Jet.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2010, in Pleasant View Cemetery, north of Jet, with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Cherokee. Viewing will be 3-5 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m Monday with the family present from 6-8 p.m.
