CHEROKEE - The funeral for Donovan "Don" Owen Loomis, 84, will be 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, at First Baptist Church, Cherokee. The Rev. Tom Cooksey will officiate. Burial will be in Keith Cemetery, near Burlington. Arrangements are by Goodwin Funeral Home of Cherokee. Visitation will be 12:30-6 p.m. today, with the family present from 12:30-2:30 p.m., and 9-11 a.m. Monday. The casket will remain closed at the church.
He was born June 13, 1925, southwest of Burlington to Clifford George and Lilly Mae Owen Loomis and died Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, at Mercy Hospital, Oklahoma City.
He attended school in Burlington. He later received his GED.
He joined the Army Sept. 9, 1943. He was a combat infantryman, serving in New Guinea. He received the Purple Heart, two Bronze Service Stars, World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon and Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He was honorably discharged Dec. 19, 1945, and returned to the family farm southwest of Burlington.
He married Mary E. Mincks Sept. 8, 1948, in Alva. She died Jan. 12, 2006.
He farmed and worked as clearing crew foreman for Alfalfa Electric Co. from 1972 until retirement in 1987.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Cherokee.
Surviving are two daughters, Marilyn Loomis and Carolyn Loomis, both of Oklahoma City.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to First Baptist Church, Cherokee.
