JAMES E. EMBREE
The funeral for James E. Embree, 80, of Langley, will be 10 a.m. Monday at Riverside Church of Christ, Burlington. Ray Hull will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Keith Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Cherokee. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.
He was born Nov. 2, 1925, in Enid to James A. and Dovie Snodgrass Embree and died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at his home.
He enlisted in the Army in December 1945 and was sent to Fort Sill and Camp Walter in Mineral Wells, Texas, where he completed basic training. He served in the 90th Division, 3rd Army, 26th Infantry, at the Military Tribunal Palace of Justice in Nuremberg, Germany, during World War II. He attained the rank of staff sergeant. Following his discharge in April 1947, he went to work at the Wichita (Kan.) Police Department until 1956. He helped start Thrifty Rent-a-Car and traveled throughout the United States opening new offices. He worked for Avis Rent-a-Car and Rolling Hills and Shangra La golf courses.
He married Joan Kinnaman April 28, 1957, in Wichita.
Surviving are his wife, Joan; two daughters, Sherri Garroutte of Oolagah and Lori Kraft of Burlington; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two infant sons.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to St. Francis Hospice of Vinita.
