The funeral for Dean Hachenberg, 85, of Hot Springs, Ark., will be 9 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Goltry Congregational United Church of Christ. The Rev. Joe Thompson will officiate. Burial will be in Karoma Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Helena. Viewing will be 1-8 p.m. today at the funeral home and prior to service at the church.
He was born June 9, 1924, in Ponca City to Lester and Annie Reily Hachenberg and died Saturday, June 13, 2009, in Hot Springs. He married Florene Pekrul Nov. 23, 1949, in Goltry. He was a veteran of 12 campaigns during World War II. His military awards included the Am-erican Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal and eight stars, Philippine Liberation Medal and one star, Navy United Com-mendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory World War II Medal. He participated in action at Kiska, Tarawa, Kwajalein Atoll, Eniwetok Atoll, Kavieng, Saipan, Tinian, Angaur Island, Iwo Jima and Leyte Island. His ship, the USS Tennessee (BB43), took fire from shore batteries and numerous air attacks including a direct hit by a Japanese suicide plane. He also participated in the night battle of Surigao Straits.
Following his honorable discharge, he returned to civilian life and earned a master’s degree in school administration with an undergraduate degree in math. He served as school superintendent and later became a petroleum engineer. They lived 13 years in Liberal, Kan.; 11 years in Olatha; 15 years in Augusta, Kan.; and seven years in Hot Springs. He taught school in Bishop, Fort Supply and Cherokee and Ingalls and Kismet schools in Kansas. He was a ham radio operator, a KCCH Mason and a Shriner at the Wichita Temple. He was a member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church, Hot Springs.
Surviving are his wife, Florene of Hot Springs, and his children, Bruce, Donita and Andrea Balfour, all of Royal, Ark.
He was preceded in death by one brother.

The funeral for Florene (Pekrul) Hachenberg, 90, who died at Claremore Nursing Home, will be 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at Goltry Congregational Church. The Rev. Danny Wayman will officiate. Burial will be in Karoma Cemetery, under the direction of Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Helena. Florene was born January 1, 1928 in Goltry to Gus and Anna Streich Pekrul and passed from this life Wednesday, June 13, 2018. She attended Ringwood and Goltry schools and earned Bachelor and Master Degrees from NWOSU in Alva. There she met Dean Hachenberg and they were married on November 23, 1949 in Goltry. She taught in various schools in Oklahoma and Kansas before retiring in 1987 to live in Augusta, Kansas. During that time, she and Dean enjoyed traveling with their trailer from Florida to Oregon, Texas to Montana. They moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas in 2002 to be near their daughter. She returned to Tulsa in 2015.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Donita and Bruce Balfour of Catoosa; granddaughter, Andrea Balfour of Seattle, Washington; nephews, Robert Thompson, Larry Thompson, and Don Pekrul and nieces, Judy Bemis and Nancy Clinton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister and one brother.
