Enid,OK — The graveside service will be held in Karoma Cemetery, Goltry, on Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at 3 p.m. for Oleeva Dittner Evans, 93. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Helena. Memories may be shared with the family at www.lanhmanmemorials.com. On Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, our Aunt Oleeva quietly and peacefully passed to her eternal home in heaven. Even though we will miss her terribly, without a doubt she is surrounded by all those who have loved her so dearly for all her life.
Hazel Oleeva Shorter was born Aug. 27, 1915, in Freedom to Wily and Edna Mason Shorter.
She attended school in Hillsdale and Goltry, graduating from Goltry High School in 1933.
On Jan. 8, 1934, she married Herbert Fredrick Dittner. Together they farmed in the area for several years before moving into Goltry. A daughter, Laura Lou, was born Sept. 16, 1934. Oleeva and Herb owned a custom wheat harvesting operation. For many years they traveled from southern Oklahoma to Canada harvesting wheat. Additionally, Oleeva was a professional upholsterer who worked independently reupholstering furniture for individuals and businesses throughout northwest Oklahoma. Oleeva was an active member of Goltry Congregational Church and served on the national board of the church.
Following Herbert’s death, she married Russell Evans of Nash on Nov. 28, 1981. They lived in Nash for 14 very happy years together before his death. They were active in the Baptist Church and Senior Citizens Center.
After a period of ill health, Oleeva moved into Greenbrier Assisted Living Facility in Enid. During those years Oleeva attended Central Christian Church and remained busy with sewing, quilting, crocheting and drawing. As her health deteriorated Oleeva moved to Greenbrier Nursing Home, where she lived until her death.
Oleeva faced many tragedies during her life. She was preceded in death by both husbands, her son-in-law, Ernie Hromas of Waukomis; an infant granddaughter, Teresa Geraldine Hromas; and the light of her life, her grandson Herb Hromas. Oleeva also outlived her seven siblings, Ida Lee Shorter, Lloyd Shorter of Goltry, George Shorter of Shreveport, Ileene Noland, Alpha John Shorter and Betty Louise Henneke, all of Enid, and Dr. Dan Shorter of Alva. Oleeva never wavered in her belief that God is good and takes care of His children, nor did she feel sorry for herself or dwell on life’s hardships. She was greatly loved by her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was the family matriarch and storyteller.
She is survived by her daughter, Laura Lou Hromas of Greenbrier Village, one great-granddaughter, Rhonda Hromas of Canton, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the charity of donor’s choice through the funeral home.
