ENID — Celebration of Life for Melvin Donald Bloss, 52, Enid, will be Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at 2 p.m. in the Oakwood Christian Church with Rev. Kristen Pickard officiating. Burial will follow in Karoma Cemetery, Goltry, under direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Sunday night, January 23, 2011, from 6-8 p.m. at Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.
He was born August 20, 1958, in Enid to Billy Donald and Marlene Carroll Korte Bloss and died Thursday, January 20, 2011, at OU Medical Center. He grew up in Enid and graduated from Enid High School in 1976. He moved to Kansas City in 1978, owned and operated an elite catering and event-planning business, "Food Glorious Food." In 1998, he returned to Enid, where he worked in retail sales and created an interior design company "Mel and Friends." He was currently a realtor with Nicholas Real Estate.
He was a Board Member of Oklahoma Foundation for the disabled, a Board Member of the State of Oklahoma Special Olympics Program; founding President of the ATS Foundation, a program that provides scholarships for at-risk children for the arts, where he was instrumental in organizing events and "kicking off" the first successful fundraising event; Past President of the Substance Abuse Program Professionals (SAPP); and Member of the Enid Association Metro Realtors.
He was the 2010 recipient of the "Most Cooperative Realtor", this is an annual award given by peers and Mel was honored to be this year's recipient. He also received "The ERA Real Estate Beyond Excellence Award", by the national; he was a $99 Club member of the RPAC; chairman of the social and public relation committees for EMAR and received the Delaware County Friendship Homes, 2010 Special Olympics "Volunteer of the Year".
He is survived by his son, Joseph Maddox, a brother Mike Bloss, his parents, Aunt Sharon and Uncle Max Helm of Weeki Wachee, Fl., two nieces, Nikki and husband Brent Juhnke, and their children Leah and Ashton, Kristin Cantrell and her children Jesse and Cole, and special friend, Tanya Kennedy.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested contributions be made to one of the following memorials; The Delaware County Group Home Special Olympics or the ATS Foundation with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodian. Condolences may be made online at Brown-Cummings.com.
