Service of Remembrance and Celebration of Life for Fredrick Dale Pettus, 83, of Lahoma, Okla., will be 2 p.m. today, March 23, 2015, at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home, with the Revs. Jim and Gail Edmison officiating. Interment will follow at Good Hope Cemetery, Helena, Okla.

Dale was born March 31, 1931, in Helena, Okla., the son of Fredrick and Lola Ayers Pettus. Dale passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2015.

He was a graduate of Helena High School in 1949.On June 4, 1950, he was united in marriage to Wynona Jerleen Morris. She preceded him in death on June 25, 2007.

Dale began married life in Baxter Springs, Kan., working for Bell Lumber Co. The next year, they moved back to Enid to work for the Frisco Railroad. In the late 1950s, Dale began his construction career building small homes and storm shelters. In the early '60s, he owned Garfield Building Supplies west of Enid. By 1964, he opened Pettus Lumber and Supply in Lahoma.

Dale was instrumental in reviving the Lahoma community by developing several neighborhoods and encouraging businesses to move to Lahoma. He served several terms on the town board, worked to bring a volunteer fire department to Lahoma, and was a charter member of Lahoma Lions Club.

While he continued to build homes in the area, Dale started Quickway Industries, which was a truss plant and component homes. He also owned Tradeway Groceries in the late '70s, and then in 1980, he branched out and was owner of Frontier Fluid Haulers. In 1984, Dale and his sons formed Pettus Construction Inc. and they went into the asbestos abatement business. He did this until his retirement in 1996.

Dale was a wonderful husband, the best Dad and was lovingly known as "Boompa" to his grandchildren. His laughter, booming voice, love for animals and imaginary kitty will be missed.

Survivors include three daughters, Vickie Haffner and husband Jeff of Grove, Okla., Nancy Thomas and husband David of Celina, Texas, and Polly Watkins and husband Jeff of Lahoma; three sons, Jim Pettus and wife Leona "Lee" of Lahoma, Pat Pettus and wife Sandy of Lahoma, and Mike Pettus and wife Cheryl of Guthrie, Okla.; 24 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Orpha Lawrence of Fairview, Okla.

Mr. Pettus was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jerry; infant granddaughters, Taylor and Nicole Watkins; daughter-in-law, Margarita Pettus; and a brother, Lawrence "Red" Pettus.

Memorial contributions may be made to donor's choice, with Ladusau-Evans serving as custodian of the funds.
