WEBSTER McKINLEY GLIDEWELL
Helena, OK. -- Webster McKinley Glidewell, 88, died Thursday. Services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday in the United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Randall officiating. Burial will be at the Good Hope Cemetery under the direction of Kenny Lanman Funeral Home.
Web Glidewell was born November 7, 1896, to James and Alice Glidewell on the family homestead 3 miles south of Helena. While growing up, he attended Highland School and after graduating from the eighth grade, went to Connell State School of Agriculture at Helena. He graduated in 1914 and again in 1915. He then went to O.U. where he lettered four years in football and withdrew for a few months to fulfill his military obligations and then returned to O.U. to graduate in 1919. After graduation, Web worked at the Garber State Bank for one year, then returned to Helena to help his father with the farming. While farming, he taught and coached for two years at Helena and met and married his first wife, Helen Aurora Alloway. To this union was born three children, Bob, Lora Lee and Betty Lou. Web and his father helped to purchase the Farmers National Bank and consolidated it with the Helena National Bank in 1924. In 1974, Web received recognition from the Oklahoma Bankers Association as a 50-year banker.
Aurora passed away in 1969 and Web married Hazel Ahsmuhs in 1971.
He was an active member of the Helena United Methodist Church where he was chairman of the administrative board, chairman of the advisory board, chairman of the trustees, Sunday school teacher, and superintendent, Helena School Board for several years, Helena Chamber of Commerce, Helena Lions Club, Alfalfa County Historical Society, Oklahoma Heritage Association, Alfalfa County Republican Party, the Sons and Daughters of the Cherokee Strip Pioneers, the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 154, Helena Masonic Lodge No. 298, the Scottish Rite Consistory of Guthrie, served in Grand Lodge and the American Legion Gano Post No. 28, Oklahoma Bankers Association and Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association. He was an honorary member of Helena FFA and the Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity alumni. At the time of his death, Web was an active farmer-rancher and president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of the Helena National Bank.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel, of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Norman (Lora) Woodall of Newport News, VA. and Mrs. Richard (Betty) Graft of Altus, OK.; one step-son, Frank Moore of Houston, TX.; one sister, Mrs. John (Ruth) Getgey of Cincinnati, OH.; eight grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife and his son, Bob, in February of 1985.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Methodist Church Building Fund or Web Glidewell Scholarship Fund with the funeral home serving as custodian.
