J. C. Culbertson Dies
J.C. Culbertson, 84, passed away about 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon, Jan. 15, 1938 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.R. Luscombe and family in Helena. Death came after a prolonged illness.
Besides Mrs. Luscombe, those who survive are two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Schindler of Shelby, Ohio who is here, and Mrs. Blanche Pasley of Denver, Colo., and a brother Clayton Culbertson of Eminence, Mo. Mrs. Schindler came several weeks ago to help care for her father.
Funeral services were help at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Helena Methodist Church, and burial was in Good Hope cemetery with the Cordray Funeral Home in charge.
John Calvin Culbertson was born Jan. 4, 1854 in Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio, and the son of John A. and Mariah Culbertson, and departed this life at the home of his daughter Mrs. Belle Luscombe at Helena, Okla. at the age of 84 years and 11 days.
He was married to Mary A. Shafer at Belleville, Ohio, in September, 1874.
To this union were born six children, three daughters, Bertha, Belle, and Blanch, three sons, Floyd, John and Clayton. His wife and two sons, Floyd and John preceded him in death.
He was converted at the age of nineteen and joined the Lutheran Church.
They spent the forepart of their married life in Richland County, Ohio, later moving to Missouri, and in 1905 he came to Oklahoma, where he spent the remainder of his life.
Later he married Florence Davis of Wichita, Kansas, who was unable to be present for last rites because of ill health.
Those left to mourn his departure are his wife Florence and children, Mrs. Bertha Schindler of Mansfield, Ohio, Mrs. Belle Luscombe of Helena, Mrs. Blanch Pasley of Denver, Colo., and Clayton Culbertson of Eminence, Mo., 18grandchildren, and 33 great grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and many friends.
With the pastor, Rev. E.E. Holmberg, officiating, funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Helena Methodist Church. Assisting in the service were Mrs. Willard Wagner, Miss Bernice Keiffer, M.P. Welch, R.B. Baker who sang “Going Down the Valley,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” and “We’ll Never Say Goodby in Heaven,” with Mrs. E.E. Holmberg playing piano accompaniment.
Burial was in Good Hope cemetery, and P.A. Kline, C.E. McCollum, D.S. Van Wye, Ira Monyhun, J.S. Bailey and F.C. Fisher, Sr. were pall bearers.
