Carmen – Graveside service for Basil F. Veley, 81, will be at 2 PM Thursday in the Eagle Chief Cemetery, southwest of Carmen. Military rites will be conducted by Fort Sill with Larry Gregory to officiate. Arrangements are by Wentworth Mortuary, Carmen.
He was born October 23, 1914, in Woods County to Wilbur and Mary Margaret Gambill Veley and died suddenly Tuesday, December 12, 1995, at the fairgrounds in Alva. He attended Carmen schools, graduating in 1934, then worked for various farmers before enlisting in the United States Army in 1942. He served during World War II and was discharged as a Sgt. in 1948.
On November 10, 1947, he married Helen T. Jones at Long Branch, New Jersey. They lived in Carmen. He was self – employed as a licensed trainer of race horses, and was a member of the Alva VFW.
Surviving are his wife, Helen; two daughters, Shelley Lund of Moore and Maureen Gregory of Helena; two sons, Buddy and Bill, both of Carmen; one sister, Clela Gray of Alva; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and one grandson.
