John L. Flanigan
Cleo, Oklahoma Territory
Vol. 1, No. 5
03-29-1894
Submitted by: Jo Aguirre

Sad Accident

Died: March the 24, 1894, John Flanegan [sic], age forty years, Jennie Flanegan [sic], age twenty-nine, Hattie May Flanegan, age five years, all of Cleo township, M county, Oklahoma Territory. Funeral services were held last Tuesday [27-Mar] morning at nine o'clock.

The above family were killed by their dugout caving in on them last Saturday night. Mr. and Mrs. Flanegan [sic] were married six years ago at Terre Haute, Indiana, and after residing in Indiana for a short time they moved to Kansas and located in Sedwick [sic] county. They came to M county and settled on their claim eight miles north of Cleo, March the 19. During the latter part of the week, Mr. Flanegan had his brother --- Flanegan [sic] and brother-in-law, Ike Hayes, helping him with his dugout; and on Saturday after having completed it the family moved in. They had agreed to take dinner at Ike Hay's [sic] the next day --- Flanegan [sic] went over to Ike's about noon on the next day but John Flanegan [sic] and family had not yet arrived, so after waiting for them until about three o'clock Ike Hays [sic] and --- Flanegan [sic] came over [to] John Flanegan's [sic] place to see what was the matter and found that the roof of the dugout had caved in burying the entire family. They gave the alarm and a party went to work to remove the dirt and timbers, and about dusk they found the bodies lying in their bed just as they had slept. The rig-pole was rotten in the center and broke under the weight of dirt, killing them instantly.

A brother of Mrs. Flanegan [sic] and Mr. Flanegan's [sic] brother are all the relatives here. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the entire community.
